Routes under this umbrella have in common that they all come closer to the Spanish sun, where along the way you will be reunited with (almost) forgotten impressions and memories.
This time the trip goes from Moddergat to Hattem.
Afterwards you will have refreshed your memory and also discovered that the Netherlands is so damn beautiful. And that is certainly worth 5 stars.

Het-Wad bij Moddergat
This route starts in the far north of the Netherlands, at the Wadden Sea in Moddergat.
Moddergat is worth a visit for several reasons: the beauty of the village in general, the view of the Wadden Sea and the special story that the former fishing village has to tell. The combination of the Wadden Sea, the sea wall (mostly with sheep) and the small fishermen's houses make for a village that is more than worth a visit. An absolute 'must visit' in Moddergat is Museum 't Fiskershúske. This small but extremely interesting museum tells the story of the fishing village of Moddergat and gives you an insight into what life was like here in the past.
You leave the village via a former shrimp factory and continue your route south. Soon you will come across a special representative of a widespread phenomenon in Friesland in Wetsens: the bell tower. This is a frame of thick wooden or iron beams, in which one or more bells are hung. This can be mounted at the top of the church or bell tower, but can also be freestanding. A carillon also hangs in a bell tower. On the way you will come across three different types. In Wetsens the bell tower hangs on the facade of the church, further on in Gorredijk there is a stone version as a bell house. Along the route further on you will come across a few freestanding wooden bell towers such as in Opeinde, Sonnega and Katlijk.
Boniface is often mentioned in the same breath as Dokkum. This was the place where he literally gave up the ghost. The English missionary travelled to Friesland to convert the Frisians. A piece of cake, because his own Anglo-Saxon language was similar to Old Frisian, so it could not have been due to miscommunication. The journey to Dokkum was somewhat reminiscent of a parade when the very elderly Boniface and his entourage travelled to Friesland in 754. For the Frisians, however, the conversion expedition was reminiscent of an advancing army. They intervened, blocked the road and made short work of the party. As a visible memorial to the place where Boniface died, a 2.50 metre high Boniface statue stands next to the Boniface source. A chapel made of monastery stones was built at the source as a destination for pilgrimage.
For culture lovers, there are several museums and historical sights to discover in Dokkum. The Admiralty House, the Bolwerk and the City Hall are impressive examples of architecture from times gone by.
On the hundreds of terps of medieval Friesland there was often a stins: a stone residential tower with very thick walls, to defend the terp residents in times of armed conflict. Of these stone houses only one remains (the Schierstins, built around 1300) and here and there remains can be found. There are more of the first stone country houses (states), strongly modified over time. You will pass the Schierstins in Veenwouden, the Glinstrastate in Burgum and also Lindenoord in Wolvega and between the Harinxmastate and Lydenstein in Beetsterzwaag you will find the coffee.
The polder landscape offers wide views along the way, with memories of cows and meadow birds. Also the lakes with water birds, ditches, mills, especially tjaskers, for the drainage, the reed and the farms with their "Ûleboerden".
From Friesland you quickly arrive in the Netherlands, a village in Overijssel, a province in the Netherlands. Here the Weerribben begin, as evidenced by the waving reed collars along the canals.
The historic centre of the former Zuiderzee harbour town of Blokzijl is full of national monuments. On the Bierkade and along the Brouwersgracht are beautiful merchant houses with graceful bell gables dating back to the 17th century. You will also see many national monuments in the picturesque streets. Very narrow buildings with rich stepped gables and beautifully framed front doors. But also larger, stately buildings with sleek cornice facades. If you like history and/or architecture, you will be amazed by Blokzijl. Here you can have a great lunch in the Mauritshuis.
You leave Blokzijl in a southerly direction and now enter the heart of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. With over 10,000 hectares, it is the largest contiguous lowland peat bog area in northwestern Europe. Due to several dike breaches in the 18th century, a labyrinth of ponds, lakes, ditches, mysterious-looking swamp forests, vast reed plots and flowery meadows has emerged here. The submerged village of Beulake lies on the bottom of the Beulakerwijde. If you are lucky, you can see the tower rise from the water.
The history of Zwartsluis goes back to the end of the fourteenth century. With 'Der Swarten Sluys' the access from the Meppeler Diep to the Zwarte Water was dammed and settlement arose. After a canal connected Zwartsluis to Giethoorn around 1560, the village along the former Zuiderzee coast grew into an export port for billions of peat and the shipping industry flourished there. This wealth can still be seen today.
Hasselt is, as befits a true Hanseatic city, a water city. The Zwarte Water crosses the city. If you are lucky, the ark will be moored there. In addition to this river, Hasselt also has an old city moat, in which the contours of the old fortified city can be seen. Water has always played an important role in the Hanseatic city. A remnant of this is the Stenendijk, the oldest masonry sea wall in the Netherlands. And let's not forget the lime kilns, world heritage of yesteryear.
From Hasselt it is still a short distance to the Hanseatic city of Hattem, your temporary end point. You look for a place for your vehicle and during your exploration through Hattem you have to keep your camera at hand. You will encounter so many cute streets and unique sights Hattem that you want to capture.
In addition to the historical highlights, you will enjoy the various museums, such as the Dutch Bakery Museum, the Voerman Museum and the Anton Pieck Museum. The fairytale works ensure that you look at the world around you with a completely different view.
Hattem is simply a very photogenic city. It is nice to stay here after the ride.

The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead.
