Route Summary We drive from Northampton to Brecon and end with a very beautiful and exciting ride through the beautiful Bannau Brycheiniog national park.
Today we mainly drive through beautiful Wales, known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and historical sights. It is a mysterious Celtic country known for its castles, picturesque villages, mountains, lakes and a beautiful cliff coast.
Although we obviously have time to enjoy all the beauty that awaits us, I give this route three stars. Today we still have to put some kilometers under our tires so that the choice of roads is sometimes also practical.

Brecon Beacons National Park is a must-see with its heathlands, hidden waterfalls, sheep meadows, and fern-filled gorges. This nature park in south Wales consists of four mountain ranges, and the Central Beacons in particular is a paradise for hikers. In this dreamy landscape, you will also find picturesque houses, castles, forts, and menhirs. There is so little light pollution that Brecon Beacons has even been declared the UK's first Dark Sky Reserve!
Start off with a visit to Blaenavon World Heritage, located in the historic mining region of Wales. Explore the Blaenavon Ironworks, National Coal Museum, and historic railway line to Pontypool - all part of the industrial world heritage.
Next, follow in the footsteps of ex-convicts on a tour of Shrewsbury Prison, home to more than 200 years of history. You'll explore the former prison with a prison office that once managed the wings, for the inside scoop on what happened within its walls. You'll hear stories about the death penalty and see the places where executions took place.
Make your way to The Royal Pump Rooms, a historic building that was once a bathhouse and is now a museum and art gallery. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the cafe and stroll through the gardens.
Continue towards Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary, an animal sanctuary that aims to rescue and protect apes and other animals.
Ride towards Brecon Beacons National Park, known for its natural beauty, mountains, and hiking trails. Marvel at the historical sights and prehistoric remnants along the way.
Before heading back, you can make a stop at Llangorse Lake, the largest natural lake in South Wales surrounded by mountains. Enjoy the various activities available, such as kayaking, fishing, and hiking.
