Route Summary
The second leg of the return journey. You leave small but beautiful Andorra behind you and you soon find yourself in the foothills on the French side of the Pyrenees. From one Parc Naturel to another and via the old city of Carcassonne you dive into the hilly hinterland of the Languedoc. On the way to your final destination, just south of Millau, the city known for the prestigious viaduct. But before you've even reached Carcassonne... folks, keep an eye on where and when the Tour de France is. Your ride today is mostly downhill. You saddle up your motorcycle, start it in the parking garage and as the garage door slowly opens, you slowly drive the motorcycle out. Just maneuver through busy Andorra City and you will reach the most beautiful roads and beautiful views at a lonely height.From beautiful Andorra, where you can refuel cheaply (and in a very special covered area), you drive into the French part of the eastern Pyrenees. It is wonderful to swing in the foothills of these high mountains. You can connect small villages and settlements along traffic-calmed roads, without them disrupting the pace.
And then, what was already referred to in the summary. From Puivert the original route would have led via Chalabre and then the D52 to Limoux. Until... your on-duty reporter failed to check where and when the Tour de France would pedal through France. Well, exactly where the route was at the time the guy on duty was driving there. When I arrived at Chalabre, everything seemed to be running smoothly, only a loose fence separated me from one side of the street to the other side of the street. Grab it 8 meters. However, the gendarme on duty refused to let me through. “Mais monsieur, je suis fatigué” I babbled in my worst French. He was not to be relented, although the procession would not pass through the town until many hours later.
Luckily, a great alternative route has been discovered especially for you, thanks to this French gendarme. Through a thick forest on a narrow road with reasonable asphalt, you arrive in Limoux half an hour later. The detour has of course been removed from the route! Time to enjoy a delicious coffee in a brasserie.
Carcassonne is not much further on your route. A wonderfully beautiful fortified city, whose origins date back to the 8th century BC. If you can make time for it, it is definitely something you can cross off your bucket list.
If not, you drive along Carcassonne on the south side and hopefully the road diversion, which was there in 2023, will be resolved.
Just after Carcassonne you have the opportunity to have a delicious lunch. If you're in the mood for steak, then you've come to the right place.
After lunch you will arrive in the hilly part of the Languedoc. Enjoy turning corners until you feel nauseous, with the occasional car. The roads here vary in width. Sometimes even very narrow and then the signals have to be red when you encounter a French motorist. These are not exactly from your own side of the road.
Not only are you treated to many bends, the landscape also gives you ahhhh and ohhh in your helmet again and again. What a wonderful area to drive around. Hills, valleys, windings, hairpin bends and all for nothing!
Oh well, you have to refuel again. If you're lucky, you won't have to wait longer than 15 minutes at the selected gas station, even though it says: I'll be back in 10 minutes (it just doesn't say what time that applies :-)). And smoking while refueling, it's all done with the famous French twist!
Just south of Millau (yes, yes, tomorrow you will see the viaduct) you drive onto the hotel grounds. While enjoying a refreshment at the pool you think: wow... luckily we didn't see a cyclist, but they did a great job at MRA again!

The routes have been carefully created by Bert Loorbach, who is an enthusiastic motorcyclist himself. He lived in France for a year and a half, during which time he devoted himself to mapping the unknown and beautiful back roads of France especially for motorcyclists.
The routes are bundled in the Motortourgids France part 1 of Kosmos publishing house and now also available in MyRouteApp.
I have taken over the routes in MRA and sometimes adjusted them slightly to make them even more interesting for the motorcyclist.

24 Magnificent trails in France
It is clear that France is one of the most beautiful and best touring countries. It offers an incredibly varied landscape with good roads and a pleasant climate. It is not for nothing that you see so many motorcyclists there. My previous collection of 25 routes in France (25 Magnificent routes in France) were based on the route descriptions from the Motortourgids France part 1 made by Bert Loorbach.
This collection of 24 routes comes from Motortourgids France part 2. In this collection, a difference has been made between approach routes and motorcycle tours in a certain area. The approach routes can also be used in combination with the routes from Motortourgids France part 1
The routes are sometimes slightly adjusted based on the tips that Bert Loorbach gives in his description, or because of another place to spend the night, or to reach the minimum length of 2 hours for the MRA Library. For each route, the review contains a more detailed description, including options to stay overnight or places of interest along the way, which are also indicated with a POI and if possible with a short description.
Two or more routes have been created for a number of areas, such as for Burgundy, Auvergne, The Alps, Tarn and Cévennes and Nord-Pas de Calais. These routes can be nicely combined in a multi-day trip.
