This route takes you through five countries in one day. From the Netherlands to Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and then to the final destination in France. This route has many interfaces around the Ardennes Offensive.
In addition to Liège, you will also pass Bastogne, Esch sur Sûre, Saarlouis, Saint Avoid and the old ceramics factory at Mettlach. All in all a route to really enjoy.
It is a long route so leave on time.
To make you aware that you pass many countries, the borders are marked as waypoints along the way
I rate this route with 5 stars because of the beautiful forest areas through the Ardennes, beautiful roads, beautiful views and beautiful sights.

La Roche en Ardenne
The first major town you pass in Belgium is Liège, also known as Liège in French. Liège is a bustling city located in the east of Belgium, in the Wallonia region and has a rich history and vibrant culture, is located on the banks of the river Meuse and is an important industrial and economic center in Belgium. The city has a long history dating back to Roman times. You soon veer off and follow the diversion route of the Meuse known as 'Derivation de la Meuse'.
Pay attention because it can be very busy in Liège due to roadworks.
After Liège you drive south on the motorway towards Luxembourg until exit 50 at Fraiture. This highway is recognizable because in many places it runs over viaducts that rise high above cities and forest areas. The longest viaduct can be found at Remouchamps, which is 939 meters long and is built over 'Vallée de l'Amblève'.
This highway runs through the forest areas 'Le Grand Bois', 'Parc Natural Sources' and 'Fagnes de Nazieufa'. After leaving the highway you drive through the nature reserve 'Bois d'Odeigne' to the town of La Roche-en-Ardenne, which is also called the Pearl of the Ardennes. In La Roche you have a coffee stop.
La Roche is located in the Luxembourg province of Belgium. It is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills and the river Ourthe. Not only the medieval castle is a magnet for tourists, but also the museum about the battle of the Ardennes is worth a visit. An old American Sherman tank is still standing on the river l'Ourthe. This tank is a tribute to the armored divisions that succeeded in liberating the village in December 1944.
Then you continue through Parc naturel de deux Ourthes towards Bastogne.
Bastogne is also known as Bastogne among the Dutch speakers. Every year the famous professional cycling race called Liège-Bastogne-Liège is held, of which Bastogne is the turning point. In addition to its sporting fame, Bastogne is also known for its role in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. You will therefore visit the Bastogne Barracks museum here.
It is also a historic city with a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The town is surrounded by a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, forests and meadows, making it a popular destination for walkers and nature lovers.
When you have left Bastogne, just after the town of Bras, you pass the border of Belgium-Luxembourg. You continue your way towards Esch-sur-Sûre where you make a small loop via the dam to be able to take a look from the south side at the oldest castle, dating from 968, in Luxembourg. The name Luxembourg is incidentally a corruption of two Old High German words luzzil (= small) and burg (= castle). Luxembourg actually means small castle.
Not much later you arrive at the lunch stop at the restaurant of camping Nommerlayen. Nice to know is that you have already covered half of the day's distance at this location.
This campsite is run by Dutch people and is very popular for its child-friendly design.
Shortly after lunch you arrive in Larochette where you have a beautiful view of the ruin. Then you continue towards Germany.
At Grevenmacher you drive, via Moselbrucke over the Moselle, across the Luxembourg-Germany border.
You then drive a short distance along the Moselle and turn off at the town of Nittel in the direction of Saarburg aan de Saar.
In Saarburg you will visit the 20 meter high waterfall, which is located in the middle of the city, to take some pictures.
Then you drive south along the river Saar along the beautiful German 'Saarschleife und Leukbachtal' to the next coffee stop in Wallerfangen at Bäckerei Barbarossa.
Enjoy the vineyards and beautiful mountain slopes along the way. The wine that comes from here falls under the Moselle wines.
You keep following the Saar until Saarlouis, after which you drive towards France.
Saarlouis is the last larger city you pass in Germany. Just like in the Netherlands, Germany no longer has conscription, but in Saarlouis, as the oldest garrison town in the Saarland, you drive past the Graf-Werder-Kazerne, which is part of the German Bundeswehr. The barracks are named after Count Werder, who was a general in the German Bundeswehr from 1808-1887.
This barracks mainly facilitates support services for the German army.
Just above Creutzwald you pass the German-French border. In Creutzwald you also have your last coffee stop. From there it is just over an hour's drive to your final destination.
You make a last stop at the village of Saint Avold at 'Lorraine American Cemetery and memorial'. Nearly 10,500 American soldiers are buried in this cemetery. Most of the soldiers were killed trying to free Lorraine.
With four border crossings and crossing five countries you have arrived in Sarrebourg, which is also the final destination of day 1. Here you also have a fuel stop to be able to leave with a full tank the next day.
Located on the banks of the river Sarre, this town has a rich history dating back to Roman times.
Your stay is at Hotel IBIS. A neat and affordable hotel, just outside the city.
The hotel offers plenty of parking space, neat rooms, an extensive kitchen and serves a good breakfast in the morning.

Belgian Limburg
About this region
Limburg (, Dutch pronunciation: [ˈlɪmbʏr(ə)x] (listen); Dutch: Limburg; Limburgish: Limburg; French: Limbourg) is a province in Belgium. It is the easternmost of the five Dutch-speaking provinces that together form the Region of Flanders, one of the three main political and cultural sub-divisions of modern Belgium.
Limburg is located west of the Meuse (Dutch: Maas), which separates it from the similarly-named Dutch province of Limburg. To the south it also shares a border with the French-speaking province of Liège, with which it also has historical ties. To the north and west are the old territories of the Duchy of Brabant. Today these are the Flemish provinces of Flemish Brabant and Antwerp to the west, and the Dutch province of North Brabant to the north.
The province of Limburg has an area of 2,427 km2 (937 sq mi) which comprises three arrondissements (arrondissementen in Dutch) containing 44 municipalities. Among these municipalities are the current capital Hasselt, Sint-Truiden, Genk, and Tongeren, the only Roman city in the province, and regarded as the oldest city of Belgium. As of January 2019, Limburg has a population of 874,048.The municipality of Voeren is geographically detached from Limburg and the rest of Flanders, with the Netherlands to the north and the Walloon province of Liège to the south. This municipality was established by the municipal reform of 1977 and on 1 January 2008 with its six villages had a total population of 4,207. Its total area is 50.63 km2 (19.55 sq mi).

Limburg, who thinks of Limburg, thinks of flan, coal mines, marl and the hill country. The coal mines have been closed for almost 40 years, the last load of coal was brought up from the Oranje-Nassau coal mine in Heerlen on 31 December and, as they say, South Limburg was transformed from Black to Green and unfortunately there is still little left. view of this period.
But not only pie, marl and coal in Limburg, but also a very beautiful province to tour by car or motorcycle and enjoy all the beauty that the province of Limburg has to offer. For this, the MyRoute app RouteXpert has put together a Top 10 of Car and Motorcycle routes for you.
