Route Summary
The Trans Canada Highway, also known as TCH or Highway 1, is one of the longest highways in the world, running from Victoria on Vancouver Island in the west to St. John's in Newfoundland in the east. This is part 22 that runs from Montreal to Quebec.
The Trans Canada Highway passes through all the southern provinces of the country. The route can be driven in different ways. There are namely in various alternative routes that also belong to the TCH. The total distance is around 8,000 km. We not only drive the TCH, but will take the rural roads as much as possible, because only highway driving is too boring and Canada has many beautiful roads through its beautiful landscape.
You drive through all provinces and through very varied and scenic landscapes, from the Rockies in the West, the Central Prairies to the Eastern Maritimes and the Northern Forest.
The riding season is generally April through October with longer seasons on the west coast and southern Ontario.
Provide good all season clothing or bring rain gear, depending on the province and the season the weather can change and you may be surprised by a rain or even a snow or hail shower, so be prepared.
In Canada the metric system is used, so speeds are indicated in Km / h. A helmet requirement (DOT approved) applies throughout Canada.
You will see many wildlife throughout Canada. your similar animals from province to province, such as deer, buffalos, moose, caribou, wolves, pumas, bears, mountain goats, sheep, lynx, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, badgers, various rodents and all kinds of birds.
Even if it is very tempting to stop for a photo, don't do it, it can be very dangerous.

Day 22 runs the route from Montreal to Quebec. There are several routes to drive, the route via the Trans Canada Highway through scenic rural countryside is not bad but completely highway and straight. So if you want to be at your destination in 2 to 3 hours, from Montreal you can take the Autoroute Trans Canadienne on Highway QC-20 south of the river “Fleuve St. Laurent” or north of the river Autoroute Félix-Leclerc QC- Take 40 to Quebec, both are 4-lane highways. We want to drive beautiful roads and see something different than cars, trucks and campers, so we drive a different route.
Here too you have several options such as the QC-132, a beautiful provincial road that largely follows the course of the river “Fleuve St Laurent” on the south side.
We do something completely different this day, because we have already ridden the Ottawa River on day 21 and want a bit of variety, so the route in this review takes us on provincial roads through the Quebec countryside with beautiful rural panoramas, villages and some beautiful sights to visit. One is a round of Formula 1 circuit!
We leave Montreal on the south side via the De Jacques Cartier Bridge (RP3), a steel bridge over the Saint Lawrence River. The bridge crosses Île Sainte-Hélène in the middle of the river, where you can take the exit (RP4) to visit the Parc Jean-Drapeau, the amusement park La Ronde or the Military Museum Stewart.
At RP5 stands The Biosphere (French: "La Biosphère de Montréal") is a museum dedicated to the environment. The architect of this geodesic dome was Buckminster Fuller. The building originally formed a closed structure of steel and acrylic cells, 76 meters (249 ft) in diameter and 62 meters (203 ft) high.
Via a bridge you can go from Île Sainte-Hélène to the neighboring island of Île Notre-Dame, which is known for the Formula 1 / Nascar race circuit, so a great opportunity for fans of car and motor sports to take a round (or more) drive on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (RP9), it is officially a race track and as such very beautiful. When not used for F1 and Nascar races, you can cycle / skate / run around the track. ... You can even enjoy a simple ride around the track (of course there are speed limits). The course is also surrounded by greenery, public artwork and fantastic views of Montreal.
Two points are marked with a waypoint;
RP11 The Wall of Champions, this is a chicane where races are driven close to the concrete wall during races, with the necessary crashes. But why the name “Wall of Champions”? Well, it all dates back to the 1999 race. In that eventful weekend, three F1 title winners crashed their cars in exactly the same place; running into the wall after grabbing the curb as he came out of the last chicane.
RP12 is the start finish line of the circuit. You also drive here along the pit lane. If possible, you can stop to take some pictures.
We leave the city on the beautiful Pont Victoria (RP14). Originally named the Great Victoria Bridge in honor of Queen Victoria, it was officially redesigned as the Victoria Jubilee Bridge after its renovation in 1897. In 1978 it was renamed Victoria Bridge (Pont Victoria). The bridge is about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) long and includes 24 ice-breaking piers.
Depending on the time you can choose to have lunch in Chambly, just before the next stop there are many restaurants (RP18).
About 30 kilometers southeast of Montreal, Fort Chambly (RP19) rises proudly at the foot of the Richelieu Rapids. On arrival at the Fort Chambly National Historic Site, make sure to take in the full expanse of this picturesque site as it is both beautiful and strategic. From the original wooden fortress, built in 1665 by the soldiers of the Carignan-Salières regiment, to the abandonment of British troops in the mid-19th century, every corner of the site reflects military life.
Enter the fortress with the restored main parts of the original architecture and discover how French soldiers lived in the New France era. About 30 kilometers southeast of Montréal, Fort Chambly rises proudly at the foot of the Richelieu rapids. Built in 1711 to defend the colony, this stone fortress was preceded by three wooden fortresses.
We take the QC-122 which is a four lane highway to Marieville through a beautiful green landscape with a beautiful panorama of the mountains “Mont Rougemont” and “Mont Yamaska”. In Granby you can visit the zoo with adventure and water park (RP22).
We continue the drive via QC-139, which winds through the Quebec countryside past beautiful green meadows, forests, lakes and villages. Take time to enjoy and also to stop every now and then for a photo, such as at the Belvedere des chutes de Roxton Falls (RP24), a small waterfall in the village of the same name. You can park just after the bridge.
Via QC-222 and QC-116 we drive to Richmond where we cross the Saint-Francois River over the historic MacKenzie Bridge (RP27). This bridge is notorious for its steel grating surface that can wreak havoc on vehicles, even in rain. Couple that with the fact that there is barely room for two cars to pass each other and you have a somewhat frightening experience. Fortunately, trucks are no longer allowed to cross the bridge.
We stay on the QC-116, this road is easy to drive and by now you can enjoy the green countryside in Quebec. Without a stop we drive to the city of Quebec, at RP26 we cross the Saint Lawrence river via the imposing bridge “Pont de Quebec” (RP29). Constructed of riveted steel, the bridge is 987 meters long, 29 m wide, and 104 m high. Cantilever arms of 177 m in length support a 195 m long central span, bringing the total span to 549 m. This span makes it the longest cantilever bridge in the world.
Across the river is the Aquarium du Québec (RP30). Here they care for 10,000 marine animals that live in the aquarium: fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and marine mammals. You can watch walruses and seals when fed or trained. A fascinating experience for young and old! This huge site (16 hectares) has beautifully landscaped indoor and outdoor areas.
Via Boulevard Champlain (RP31) we drive along the Saint Lawrence River to the center of Quebec where we spend the night in one of the many hotels.
Quebec is a beautiful city for a longer stay, because there is a lot to do and visit.

The Federal and Provincial Highways System that now forms the TCH were authorized by the Trans-Canada Highway Act of 1948 and opened in 1962. It was completed in 1971. The total length of the TCH is 7821 km.
Contrary to the American Interstate Highway System, the TCH does not consist of an unambiguous network of motorways, but forms a network of restricted access highways and other main routes that are more akin to the Dutch provincial roads. The route is indicated by a green shield with a white maple leaf.
The numbering of the roads that are part of the TCH is the domain of the provinces. Only the western provinces have aligned their numbering and the TCH has the designation Highway 1 there.
The main route of the TCH starts in Victoria in British Columbia and runs via Calgary and Regina to Winnipeg. From Winnipeg the route leads to Kenora in Ontario, after which several branches pass through Ontario to Ottawa.
Further east, the route passes through the province of Quebec via Montreal and Quebec, among others, to Moncton, New Brunswick. Then the TCH continues east through Nova Scotia, where a branch (via the Confederation Bridge) leads to Prince Edward Island. Another section runs down to the sea in the port city of Sydney, where a ferry service leaves for Channel-Port aux Basques on the island of Newfoundland. From there the route continues for more than 900 km to the provincial capital of St. John's, in the extreme southeast of the island.
