Route Summary
This tour takes you from La Forêt de Maronne to the Lac de Sautet, further south.This 5-star ride offers you a lot of variety, ranging from tricky climbs to long lasting roads where you can enjoy cruising and where you can open the throttle a little further.
This medium route will please the average rider more than enough, also because of the extensive selection of 'green' Michelin roads.
There is also a Small and XXL version of this route and the latter is one for those with an iron butt.
The ride is not for the faint of heart considering the tricky climb just after Bourg d'Oisans. GS and Africa Twin riders, on the other hand, won't be able to stop their fun...
Anyway, there are plenty of technical challenges on this medium route, so it's best to keep them in mind...

This 'Medium' route to the Lac de Sautet and the valley of 'Le Drac' is a nice tour that can't help but bite in the calves every now and then... It all seems to be not too bad at first glance , but don't be blinded, there are technical bits that require the necessary attention...The tour starts with the descent to Bourg d'Oisans where a gas station refills the thirsty engine. A pump is also provided at the end of the tour, so no worries, there is no shortage of petrol here.
After barely 20 kilometers you are already at the highest point of this route after a steep climb from Bourg d'Oisans. On the flanks of the Villard-Reymond and the Prégentil you drive towards La Palud and from there you move smoothly south towards the Lac de Sautet. Don't worry, the route contains enough elevation meters and curves to keep you going...
At Corps you will not only find some nice eateries, but also a connection with the famous 'Route Napoléon', the so-called 'N85'.
The Route Napoléon is a tourist route in the south of France of (depending on the source...) approximately 325 km. Opened in 1932, it traces the historical trajectory of Napoleon Bonaparte when he returned from exile on the island of Elba. The route is marked with the imperial eagle sign. Until 2006 the road had the road number N85. Since then it has consisted of separately numbered departmental roads.
After the Battle of Leipzig (1813), Napoleon's First French Empire collapsed. He was exiled to Elba in 1814, but soon escaped from the island.
He disembarked on March 1, 1815 in Golfe-Juan near Cannes, accompanied by a number of loyalists who supported him in regaining his imperial title. Napoleon traveled to Lyon via the mountains to avoid possible resistance from royalist villages in the Rhône Valley. The Route Napoléon is therefore the winding road that connects the Mediterranean Sea with Grenoble, including via Grasse, Digne and Gap.
During his journey the group of sympathizers continued to grow, so that after 20 days he arrived in Paris as a folk hero.
Today, the Route Napoléon is more of a tourist attraction.
This Route Napoléon takes you along one of the arms of the Lac de Sautet. We leave the N85 quite quickly to drive back towards the West along the other side of the arm.
In Ambel we then descend further along the second arm of the Lac du Sautet to enter the valley of Le Drac.
The river 'Le Drac' has a lugubrious name, because it actually means 'The Dragon'. In many French legends, 'Le Drac' is a monster with the body of a reptile topped with the shoulders and head of an attractive young man. This 'dragon' then attracts the careless to take them into the water of the river to drown them.
The water level is highest in June when the meltwater from the glaciers swells the river.
This 'Medium' Route adds a number of nice loops compared to the 'small' version. If circumstances permit, this medium version is definitely recommended. Extra stretches of road where you can enjoy it to the fullest. Some additional climbs are also covered, so in terms of driving experience, this 'Medium' version is definitely recommended.
After crossing 'Le Drac' it is pleasant to drive along 'green' Michelin roads to Saint-Barthélemy-Sechilienne and then return to 'home base' Forêt de Maronne via a 'départementale'.

The Stlevio Pass:
The Stelvio Pass, also known as Passo dello Stelvio, is mainly known for the stage in the Giro d'Italia. Due to the length and the difference in height, this pass is seen as one of the toughest tests in cycling. The Stelvio Pass reaches a maximum height of 2758 meters and is therefore one of the highest in the Alps. The pass connects the towns of Bormio and Prato Allo Stelvio. In winter the pass is closed due to heavy snowfall.
The Reschenpass:
The Reschenpass, also known as Passo di Resia, connects the Austrian state of Tyrol with the Italian province of South Tyrol. The pass reaches a maximum height of 1,504 meters and has been one of the most important north-south connections in the Alps in recent centuries. The pass was used long before Roman times. Along the way you will pass several highlights and historical relics. One of the highlights is the Reschensee. This lake was created after the construction of the dam and has completely submerged the village of Graun. The only thing that reminds of that is the clock tower in the middle of the lake.
Col du Galibier:
The French mountain pass Col du Galibier connects the towns of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne and Briançon via the Col du Lautaret in the south and the Col du Télégraphe in the north. The mountain pass is part of the Tour de France and very much feared, due to the fact that it can only be reached via the other two mountain passes. The pass reaches a maximum height of 2646 meters. From there you can take a walk to the viewpoint at 2704 meters. You can admire the peaks of the Grand Galibier, Mont Blanc and La Meije here.

With a height of 3798 meters the Grossglockner is the highest mountain in Austria. To fully enjoy this impressive mountain, you can drive over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the accompanying pass. The route starts from Bruck am Grossglockner and ends in Heiligenblut. Of course you can drive in two directions. The pass reaches a maximum height of 2504 meters and is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. Along the way you pass several stops with fun activities, information points, mountain huts and viewpoints. A visit to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe and Pasterzen Glacier is highly recommended.

Just like the Col du Galibier, the Col d'Izoard is also part of a stage of the Tour de France. The mountain pass connects Briançon with the valley of the river Guil. The pass connects Valle di Fassa with Val Gardena and reaches a maximum height of 2236 meters. At this height is also the border of the Italian provinces of Trentino and Bolzano. Along the way you can enjoy the view of this spectacular mountain world. Admire, for example, the three peaks of the Sasso Lungo massif, the Sella massif or the peaks of the Marmolada. This MRA route collection contains 25 beautiful motorcycle routes in different parts of France, such as the Ardennes, the Alsace, Vercors, the Drôme, the Ardèche, Cote d'Azure, Gorges du Verdon, the Ariège, the Dordogne and Brittany.
The routes have been carefully created by Bert Loorbach, who is an enthusiastic motorcyclist himself. He lived in France for a year and a half, during which time he devoted himself to mapping the unknown and beautiful back roads of France especially for motorcyclists.
The routes are bundled in the Motortourgids France part 1 of Kosmos publishing house and now also available in MyRouteApp.
I have taken over the routes in MRA and sometimes adjusted them slightly to make them even more interesting for the motorcyclist.
