RouteXpert Review
Day trip Skye and Eilaean Donan Castle. (from Plockton to Dornie) During our road trip Scotland in 2013, we could only plan one day for Skye. However, the (peninsula) island needs a minimum of two days. Our B & B was in Plockton on Sea a picturesque spot on a Bay of Loch Carron.
Keep in mind that from mid-May the mosquito larvae pop and many tiny mosquitoes overpower the island. So make sure you have Deet with you to keep them at a distance.
Via the striking Skye bridge, which transformed the island into a peninsula, we follow the A87 towards Portree. At the Sligachan Hotel we turn left, the A863 to Dunvegan. The roads on Skye are fine, neatly asphalted and curvy. It is also hilly so an eldorado for the motorcyclist.
We continue on the A863 along the beautiful west coast of Skye, past Loch Harport and Loch Bracadale.
Our first goal is to visit Dunvegan Castle & Gardens and then visit the 20km west of Heist Point. The ride on the B884 to Neist Point is beautiful and the final destination is illuminated in a bright sunbeam waiting for me. Then there is a visit to Dunvegan Castle & Gardens.
Via the A850 we continue towards the northwest head of Skye. Along Loch Greshornich and Loch Snizort reach the harbor town of Uig where we decide not to cross the South of the Quirang but continue the coastal West (A855) over the head of the island. Not a bad choice, the narrow but well asphalted road meanders through a rough, wide nature with looks on a great coastline and view of Lewis, one of the Outer Hebrides. Here we also pass the Skye Heritage Center, a stop or visit worth.
When we round the north-east head, the most northern rock formations of the Trotternish mountain range between Kendram and Glashvin with the Quirang became the most striking landmark of the Meall after Suiramach.
We drive further south and just past the village of Staffin we stop at Kilt Rock Falls, a rock formation that rages high above the coastline and where a waterfall plunges into the sea.
The road becomes broader after Staffin and we shoot up well. We enter Portree, the capital of Skye and return to the harbor. Cozy town every opportunity for coffee or lunch. After we connect to the A87 again it goes smoothly. Another stop at a waterfall for some pictures and we reach the bridge where we leave Skye and drive via Kyle of Lochalsh towards Dornie to view Eilean Donan Castle.
