The first stop is the Gold Museum (Muzeul Aurului) in Brad. Established 100 years ago, the museum is owned by MINVEST Deva and has over 2,000 exhibits from around the world and is a must-visit.
There are multiple exhibits here of the native gold that comes from the Metaliferi Mountains. The northern part of Hunedoara province has dozens of gold mines, some dating back to the time of the Romans and Dacians.
The collection includes archaeological pieces from the Brad-Criscior area, proving that humans have lived there for over 5,000 years and mined gold for at least 2,000 years.
You can see the tools that used to be used to extract and process the gold. You can find gold in all forms: filament, dendrite, grains, smooth scattered gold, free but also combined with other minerals.
Most of the exhibits come from Brad's area. The visitors can see plants, animals and even objects. You will find leaves, flowers and golden objects that resemble dogs, snakes or even the map of Romania.
In addition, the museum has a very rich mineral collection from all over the world, scientifically organized. The presentation contains general information, their origin, physical properties and their chemical composition.
The Gold Museum is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and entrance costs 15 LEU (€ 3,-) and there are guides who explain the exhibitions.
Brad is also a good location to plan lunch at one of the many restaurants.
Another beautiful sight along the route is the Fortress of Deva (Cetatea Devei), this is a fortress on a volcano in the Poiana Ruscă Mountains in the western Carpathians of Romania. From the base of the hill, the town of Deva stretches out, starting with Magna Curia and the public park. Nearby are most of the buildings of the administrative institutions of this city such as the courthouse, the prefecture, the county hall, the financial administration, the old police headquarters, the city hall and two of the oldest schools in Deva: the Decebal National College and the Pedagogical Lyceum. The fortress is connected to the base of the hill by an inclined elevator that allows tourists to reach the fortress.
In Simeria there is a beautiful castle with a beautifully landscaped park; "Castelul Bela Fay din Simeria". The history of the building is linked to the existence of the park, the Simeria Arboretum, here you can admire an extremely valuable collection of exotic and native woody plants.
Several noble families owned this estate, including Gyulay, Kun, Fay or Ocskay. It is worth noting that the inheritance was passed on to women. Since 1918, the owner is Bela Fay, naturalist and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The Simeria Forest Research and Experimentation Station has been operating here since 1954.
The Roman spa town of Germisara, today Geoagiu-Băi resort, developed over five kilometers north of the fortress, the ruins of this fortress are well worth a short stop. This fortress made use of the thermal springs dating from pre-Roman times to the first century BC. The spa town of Germisara still uses these springs, so Geoagiu-Băi can look back on a 2100-year tradition as a spa town. In this region, take the time to take beautiful pictures of, for example, the Clocota waterfall.
Located on the river of the same name, Clocota Waterfall is located in the Metaliferi Mountains and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hunedoara County. It is about 40 meters high and collects thermal water from 16 springs, so it never freezes. As a result, it is worth visiting in any season as it will be astonishing.
The way to the waterfall is very easy to go, and once you get there you will find a bench to rest and admire the wonder, and for the safety of the travelers there is also a wooden rail around the valley because this is quite deep.
Enthusiasts can plan an extra day at the Geoagiu-Băi resort to enjoy the tranquility and thermal baths.
The end point of this day is Sibiu, this is a beautiful city with a Mediterranean atmosphere, but not too touristy. There is much to see and do and there are many hotels in different price ranges.
