Climbing Trëšnjevik mountain pass
Berane, a lively town in the north of Montenegro, is a charming town where you can experience the local atmosphere. A former industrial town, Berane is now best known for its small market and northern culture, but also as a crossroads for travelers who want to venture further into Montenegro. For those who want to take a shortcut, there is the option to drive via Navotina to Andrijevica for a shorter day trip.
Following the main route, you will climb to the Kolasin 1600 ski resort, which stretches at an altitude of 1600 meters. This route takes you through the beautiful nature of the Biogradska Gora National Park, one of the oldest protected areas in Montenegro, where untouched forests and rugged mountain landscapes form the backdrop. At Restaurant Savardak or Viline Voda you can take your first break after about two hours of riding and enjoy the view, before continuing to the town of Kolašin.
Kolašin, situated at an altitude of 900 metres, is a popular tourist resort and offers access to some of Montenegro’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Its location makes it ideal for winter sports and summer hiking, and the surrounding landscapes make it one of the most beautiful towns in the region. From here, drive along the Tapa River, a smaller stream that winds its way through the green valley, towards the village of Matesevo, and climb back into the mountains to the Trëšnjevik Pass. At the top, there is a perfect spot for lunch with sweeping views of the rugged mountain landscape.
The next place on the route is the quiet Andrijevica, a charming town in eastern Montenegro, and a perfect starting point for nature explorers and hikers. After Andrijevica you follow the Lim River again to the village of Murino. This village offers a few small cafes at the roundabout, where you can take a break or buy groceries for a picnic further on the route.
The main route offers a detour to the closed border pass between Montenegro and Kosovo. It is a beautiful paved winding road that ends in a beautiful modest mountain gorge. The last meters to the full gorge (in Albania) can be viewed on foot on a gravel road.
After this detour, you descend again to Murino and follow the main road to Plav Lake, your final destination for today. This beautiful glacial lake at the foot of the Prokletije Mountains is a popular spot for hikers and those seeking peace and quiet. The Prokletije Mountains themselves, also known as the 'Balkan Alps', offer one of the most unspoilt and rugged landscapes in Montenegro, where imposing peaks, deep gorges and crystal-clear mountain lakes define the view. At Hotel Kula Damjanova you will spend the night right on the water and can enjoy an evening stroll along the lake or explore the town of Plav.

About this region
Montenegro ( (listen); Montenegrin: Црна Гора, lit. 'Black Mountain', pronounced [tsr̩̂ːnaː ɡǒra]) is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is located on the Adriatic Sea and is a part of the Balkans, sharing borders with Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north and west, Kosovo to the east, Albania to the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the southwest. Podgorica, the capital and largest city, covers 10.4% of Montenegro's territory of 13,812 square kilometres (5,333 sq mi), and is home to roughly 30% of its total population of 621,000.During the Early Medieval period, three principalities were located on the territory of modern-day Montenegro: Duklja, roughly corresponding to the southern half; Travunia, the west; and Rascia proper, the north. The Principality of Zeta emerged in the 14th and 15th centuries. From the late 14th century to the late 18th century, large parts of southern Montenegro were ruled by the Venetian Republic and incorporated into Venetian Albania. The name Montenegro was first used to refer to the country in the late 15th century. After falling under Ottoman rule, Montenegro regained its independence in 1696 under the rule of the House of Petrović-Njegoš, first as a theocracy and later as a secular principality. Montenegro's independence was recognized by the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. In 1910, the country became a kingdom.
After World War I, the kingdom became part of Yugoslavia. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together proclaimed a federation. Following an independence referendum held in May 2006, Montenegro declared its independence and the confederation peacefully dissolved.Montenegro has an upper middle-income economy and ranks 48th in the Human Development Index.
