Route Summary This is the 16th in a series of 43 Endangered ANWB routes. These were published in the Promotors between April 2015 and September 2016.
Start and end point: McDonald's Meppel (directly on the A32)
I awarded this route 3 ★★★ stars because the scenery and attractions are very good, and the roads are well maintained but not very challenging.
The route is easy to ride, and thanks to clear Tour Info Points and a logical progression, it is also very suitable for less experienced riders. Don't forget your camera - there is plenty to capture between dolmens, heathland and locks.
Tip: preferably drive this route in spring or autumn. Then Drenthe is at its most beautiful.

RouteXpert Review You start at the McDonald's restaurant in Meppel, a convenient meeting point with ample parking and a cup of coffee for the road. From here you turn almost immediately into the countryside. Narrow roads meander through the meadows, past farms and the village of Nijeveen. You drive leisurely towards Havelte, where you take a break at the Havelte Oost Training Ground. Between the heathlands and sand tracks you might spot a military exercise, so watch out for the red flags. Via Frederiksoord and Vledder you head towards Diever, where you stop at the impressive Hunebed D52 for a historic moment. This Tour Photo Point is quietly situated in the greenery and invites you to get off your bike for a while. After a few photos and some reflection on thousands of years of history you continue your way via Dieverbrug to Schenkerij De Sluiswachter - a perfect Tour Pause Point. Here you take a seat on the terrace by the water, where you can watch boats glide by while enjoying home-made cake. After the break you dive into the forests around Dwingeloo. In this part of the route, nature and silence dominate. You ride along the edge of National Park Dwingelderveld, where you can stop at the Tour Info Point of the same name. This immense wet heathland is unique in Europe and a pleasure to stretch your legs. After this, you follow winding roads towards Ruinen, where you will find a second natural pearl: Boswachterij Ruinen. Fens, forest paths and - with a bit of luck - a flock of sheep make this part one of the most beautiful parts of the ride.
The route ends with a quiet loop via Zuidwolde and De Wijk, where you can really enjoy the peace of the Drenthe countryside one more time. If you want, you can refuel at the handy Tour Fuel Point; TinQ in Meppel before you end where you started: at McDonald's.
The Beek en Brinkroute is not an adrenaline ride, but a harmonious tour through the quiet, rich landscape of Drenthe. Perfect for a relaxed motorcycle day with many stops, nature and culture. The roads are mostly well paved, but not spectacularly winding - ideal for motorcyclists who want to enjoy the surroundings and the story of the landscape.
