RouteXpert Review
Day 5 of 14 on a cross country adventure across AmericaToday starts out driving along US Highway 64 through the farmlands of Arkansas. Free flowing wide roads that use up the miles. It is not long before you arrive in the university town of Conway, home to University of Central Arkansas. Route 60 escorts you out of Conway and then route 28 winds it’s way through farmland and more long easy curves.
A stop at Mena for a break before you enter the Ouachita National Forest and start the Talimena Scenic Drive
The Talimena Scenic drive winds 61 miles along the crest of Rich Mountain and Winding Stair Mountain in the Ouachita National Forest (pronounced Wash-i-tah).
The Ouachita National Forest covers 1.8 million acres in central Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma.
The time it takes for this part of the journey depends on how many of the numerous viewpoints along the way you can resist. Each stop gives a different view that is as spectacular as the last.
The road will take you into your 2nd US State of the day as you leave Arkansas and enter Oklahoma.
Oklahoma is one of only two states whose capital cities name includes the state name. The other is Indianapolis, Indiana. Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other state, with over one million surface acres of water. These are fed by many creeks and streams that can be seen as you pass over on your way to Tulsa for the night. Passing through McAlester you join the Indian Nation Turnpike, toll is $2.20, as of Feb 2020 to take you the 40 miles you will be using it. You then just ride Highway 75 to Tulsa to end the day

About this region
Oklahoma is a state in the South Central and Southern Plains region of the United States, bordered by the state of Texas on the south and west, Kansas on the north, Missouri on the northeast, Arkansas on the east, New Mexico on the west, and Colorado on the northwest. Partially in the western extreme of the Upland South, it is the 20th-most extensive and the 28th-most populous of the 50 United States. Its residents are known as Oklahomans (or colloquially "Okies"), and its capital and largest city is Oklahoma City.
The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla, "people" and humma, which translates as "red" Oklahoma is also known informally by its nickname, "The Sooner State", in reference to the colonizers who staked their claims on land before the official opening date of lands in the western Oklahoma Territory or before the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889, which increased European-American settlement in the eastern Indian Territory. Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory were merged into the State of Oklahoma when it became the 46th state to enter the union on November 16, 1907.
With ancient mountain ranges, prairie, mesas, and eastern forests, most of Oklahoma lies in the Great Plains, Cross Timbers, and the U.S. Interior Highlands, all regions prone to severe weather. Oklahoma is at a confluence of three major American cultural regions. Historically it served as a government-sanctioned territory for Native Americans removed from east of the Mississippi River, a route for cattle drives from Texas and related regions, and a destination for Southern migrant settlers. Today twenty-five Native American languages are still spoken in Oklahoma.A major producer of natural gas, oil, and agricultural products, Oklahoma relies on an economic base of aviation, energy, telecommunications, and biotechnology. Oklahoma City and Tulsa serve as Oklahoma's primary economic anchors, with nearly two-thirds of Oklahomans living within their metropolitan statistical areas.
