RouteXpert Review As ever start the day with a full fuel tank.
Today is about one thing, Route 66. The journey today heads out of Amarillo and heads East following, where we can, the original road as much as possible. As well as travelling the historic road it is also about the roadside attractions that have been added to embellish the journey. Some are historic, and some are more eclectic.
In Conway, Texas for example there is the Slug Bug Ranch RP3. Classic roadside Americana art. Smaller than Cadillac Ranch, but also fewer to no crowds. Great spot for a photo shoot. Bring your own spray cans and leave your mark!
Arriving in Shamrock, Texas take a break at the Tower Station and U-Drop Inn. Built in 1936 by J. M. Tindall and R. C. Lewis at the cost of $23,000, this gem of a building got its start in the dust when John Nunn drew his idea for the station on the ground with an old nail. It was also the inspiration for Ramone's Body Art in the Disney Movie, Cars.
We enter Oklahoma RP8, not on the freeway but on some of the original road to enter Texola. Here we see what the more modern roads have done to some of the smaller communities along the way. In 1910 the population was 361, by 1930 it has risen to 581. But by 2010 the census revealed a population of just 36. There are still historic items in the town. The Magnolia Service Station is a historic service station (RP10) was listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1995. And there is the quirky One Room Jail. (RP11) Built in the late 1800s with just one room.
Some of the attractions are the locals themselves. Stop in Erick, Oklahoma at The Sandhills Curiosity Shop (RP14) where self-described "redneck hoarder" Harley Russell performs live, spontaneously and interactively for all those who visit the shop. The sign outside says 'The Redneck Capital Of The World' It is basically a sign hoarders museum, so stop by and take in Harley Russell was half the inspiration behind Tow Mater, a character in the "Cars" movie.
Entering Elk City we stop at The National Route 66 Museum (RP22) The museum offers visitors a personal journey through the history of the nation’s most revered highway.
More Freeway, another town, Clinton Oklahoma and we visit the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. (RP25) Focusing on transportation and the complete history of Route 66, exhibits at this museum begin with "the world's largest curio cabinet" offering special treasures collected from along the route.
The final stages of today are off the freeway and we stay true to the Mother Road, visiting Lucille's Historic Highway Gas Station (RP29) The Provine Service Station is a historic filling station operated by Lucille Hamons from 1941 until her death on August 18, 2000, the site was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
Arriving in El Reno we end our day on Route 66. Historic, eclectic and sometimes just weird this 4 stay day is enjoyable for where we stopped more than where we travelled.

About this region
Oklahoma is a state in the South Central and Southern Plains region of the United States, bordered by the state of Texas on the south and west, Kansas on the north, Missouri on the northeast, Arkansas on the east, New Mexico on the west, and Colorado on the northwest. Historically it served as a government-sanctioned territory for Native Americans removed from east of the Mississippi River, a route for cattle drives from Texas and related regions, and a destination for Southern migrant settlers. Today twenty-five Native American languages are still spoken in Oklahoma.A major producer of natural gas, oil, and agricultural products, Oklahoma relies on an economic base of aviation, energy, telecommunications, and biotechnology. Oklahoma City and Tulsa serve as Oklahoma's primary economic anchors, with nearly two-thirds of Oklahomans living within their metropolitan statistical areas.
