These country houses and castles have been used as a framework to plot the beautiful routes, but the routes remain worthwhile even without visiting the described objects. But of course the route has added value if you get off here and there and take a walk. Not all manors and castles are open to visitors, but these can be spotted from the public road or their garden or park is open to visitors.
The route is mainly on country roads, the busier N-roads and urban areas are avoided as much as possible. The length of the routes has been kept below 175 km, partly because the average speed will not be that high on many 60 km of roads.
Almost every province has one or more routes, only in South Holland and the Flevopolders no routes have been set out because there were no country houses and castles there that were eligible for this tour due to their location.
Starting point: Triumph Groningen
End point: Fortress Bourtange

The Allersmaborg is a deposit in the hamlet of Allersma between Ezinge and Aduarderzijl. The Allersmaborg dates back to the Middle Ages and is located within a spacious canal with a drawbridge and is surrounded by an English garden and woods, unfortunately nothing of all that beauty can be seen from the road!
After more than 35 km you will arrive at the Breedenborg car park.

De Breedenborg is a deposit in the village of Breede near the village of Warffum. The block-shaped deposit is still surrounded by the old moat. The borg got its current appearance around 1850. After the borg burned down in 1982, it was rebuilt in this style in 1992. This deposit is also hidden in the green.
Via Usequert you arrive in the town of Doodstil, here you drive past the so-called mayor's villa "House Barmerhoek" not a country house but worth a look!
After about 68 km you arrive at the Damsterdiep and follow it in the direction of Garrelsweer and Loppersum, and you will soon see Landgoed Ekenstein.
Ekenstein Estate
Alberdaweg 70
9901 TA Appingedam
The Ekenstein borg was built in 1648 by order of the doctor and later mayor of Groningen Johan Eeck (sr.) and his wife Johanna Bernards from Farmsum. In 1772 the deposit was expanded and provided with a moat. In 1827 the park was laid out in English landscape style. It is now used as a Hotel restaurant.
A little further on the same Damsterdiep you will come across the Rusthoven borg, unfortunately a bit further from the road and of course between the trees.
Rusthoven
Alberdaweg 74
9901 TA Appingedam
Rusthoven is a borg with former brickwork on the road along the Damsterdiep. The borg and brick factory are located next to the Ekenstein borg. According to a gable stone in the east facade, Rusthoven was built in 1686, probably by son Johan Eeck (jr.), also mayor of Groningen.
After more than 91 km you arrive in Slochteren at the Fraeylemaborg estate.

After 124 km you go into Wedde and on the right from the parking lot you will see the next deposit!

For centuries, the borg was the seat of the Lords of Westerwolde or their representative. The history of the borg is therefore closely intertwined with the history of the region. The history of the borg begins around 1360. Adde (also called Edde) Addinga had received Westerwolde on loan from the abbot of Corvey Abbey. Addinga originally came from the Reiderland, but according to the stories it lost its possessions to the advancing Dollard, or chased away after the St. Marcellus flood of 1362. The borg is now used as a children's hotel, a special holiday home for children and young people up to 16 years old. , who are born on the other side of happiness and who do not have the opportunity to go on holiday themselves.
After this you go back out of the village, and you don't follow the route to a borg or country house but to a fortress, after 142 km "Vesting Bourtange" looms up, a beautiful end point of this route through part of the province of Groningen.
