Switzerland is a wonderful country to cross by motorcycle. Not only because of the beautiful roads, but also because of the cultural and other sights - and of course the beautiful mountains! The country has enormous diversity. Mountains and water in particular determine the landscape. Lake Constance in the north is one of the most popular holiday regions in Central Europe. With Lake Geneva in the far southwest, the Swiss (along with the French) also have one of the largest lakes on the continent. Don't forget Lake Maggiore in the south, although the red flag with the white cross only flies over a small part of it. There the influence of Italy becomes clear again. It is mainly based on language. This also applies to Lake Lugano, in the far south. To discover all this, the Swiss tourist office has developed a special holiday route. This panoramic road, called Grand Tour of Switzerland, is 1643 km long. Fans of mountain passes will be happy in many places. The route takes you to the Schwägalp, the San Bernardino and the Gotthard Pass. You can follow the Grand Tour in either direction, but because most tourists do the journey clockwise, the official signposts have been adjusted accordingly.
Stage 6 of the Grand Tour of Switzerland goes from Broc to Bern. You pass several lakes, of which Lake Thun is the largest. The castle of Gruyère, Spiez and Oberhofen are architectural gems that should not be missed. But the breathtaking views, impressive mountain landscapes, unspoilt nature and glittering lakes make this trip unforgettable! The roads are of excellent quality. This route undoubtedly deserves 5 stars.

Gruyères Pays-d’Enhaut regional natural park
The Sarine flows through the green Intyamon Valley, with several dams along its course. At Lessoc, for example, the dam that was built created the Lac de Lessoc.
The surface of the lake is 20 hectares. The Lessoc Dam with a height of 33 m was completed in 1976. The lake is silting up with 40,000 m³ of alluvium per year and if nothing is done, it should be filled in by 2035.
A little further you pass Lake Vernex. It is a reservoir on the Saane/Sarine river near Rossinière. It is located at an altitude of 859 m above sea level, between the Pointe de Cray and Planachaux mountains.
After Château-d'Oex you get a beautiful view of the mountains of the Alpes Vaudoises. You continue to follow the course of the Sarine. After Saanen you turn off to the photo spot Gstaad Saanenland.
The fact that people in the Saanenland with its five beautiful side valleys feel like they are in paradise is probably also due to the legend of the hand of God. This states that he rested there during creation and created the Saanenland with his handprint - the shape of the landscape is clearly visible from here. The high mountains, between 1000 and 3000 meters, provide heavenly views. You can enjoy the view here together with mountains, forests and lakes in the background.
You now return to the road and drive to the Saanenmöserpass. The mountain pass is 1,279 meters high and connects Saanen with Zweisimmen. The road is wide, of good quality and not difficult to drive. There are no hairpin bends here. At the pass height is the village of the same name with some houses, hotels and shops and two ski slopes end here. The route to Zweisimmen follows the valley of the Kleine Simme river.
In the latter village we stop at Early Beck Boulanger Confiseur. Delicious coffee is served, but you can also pamper yourself with confectionery, pastries and cakes. New creations are devised for every season. These are based on milk, butter and eggs from the region, combined with seasonal fruit.
The Simme will keep you company all the way to Lake Thun. In one of the most idyllic regions of Switzerland, the Simme is an interesting, scenically beautiful river. The river flows along the Stockhorn and Gantrisch chain from Boltigen in an easterly direction to Lake Thun. On the left the local road runs through the Simmental with beautiful wooden houses. The route between Boltigen and Erlenbach is approximately seventeen kilometers long. The river has quiet passages but also rapids and rocky passages.
In Spiez you take a detour to the castle. The enormous square keep was built around 1200. The lower walls are about 3 m thick, but higher up they become thinner. The tower became taller several times in the following centuries until the final construction phase in 1600. In this final phase the tower was crowned with a hipped roof. The keep was originally surrounded by several detached wooden buildings. In the following centuries these buildings were replaced by a stone curtain wall and a ring of two concentric moats. A gatehouse was built next to the keep, opening out to the west. Around 1300, a residential wing was added north of the keep. In the 14th century, an extra northern wing was added to the residential wing. From the 15th to the 18th century, the castle was gradually renovated to its current appearance. The gallery was expanded and another floor was added to the residential wing. The Trüel was added to the northwest side of the keep in the 16th century. Subsequently, the baroque 'New Castle' was built on the south side of the gatehouse in the 17th and 18th centuries.
In the park you have a beautiful view of Lake Thun.
Lake Thun is surrounded by a fairytale backdrop of mountains and surrounded by numerous charming villages and the charming towns of Thun and Interlaken. The Aare River is the largest river flowing through the lake. The lake is located at an altitude of 558 meters and is up to 217 meters deep.
Restaurant Hecht in Faulensee enjoys a picturesque location right on the shore of Lake Thun. Here you can enjoy the beautiful view, relax and be pampered with culinary delights. In summer you can sit right on the water on the lake terrace, in winter or in bad weather you will enjoy the conservatory. The kitchen is mainly specialized in fish dishes, but meat lovers and vegetarians are also catered for and the menu offers something for everyone.
Interlaken is located in the Bernese Oberland on a piece of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and is dominated by the three mighty mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Already at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland was famous for its impressive mountains and the city was visited by famous people of that time, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Its success as a tourist destination was further increased by the extension of the Bernese Oberland Railways in 1890 and the Jungfraubahn in 1912.
It now continues along the top of Lake Thun to Oberhofen Castle. The castle with its medieval watchtower and turret from the early thirteenth century now houses a residential museum. From neo-Gothic dining rooms to knight's armor to a Turkish smoking lounge: the exhibition rooms show Bernese living culture from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Next to the castle is a 2.5 hectare park, which was laid out around 1840 and impressively shows the different fashion trends in the history of garden art. Striking groups of trees, exotic shrubs, colorful flower arrangements, the picturesque tower and the view of the impressive mountain backdrop above the lake make this the most photographed garden.
Past the city of Thun you drive through the Gantrisch nature park. The road winds through endless forests interspersed with open landscape. Here you can enjoy breathtaking views.
A few kilometers further, Bern is in sight. We follow the ring road to the hotel just outside the city.
The Hotel A1 Grauholz is conveniently and quietly located near a forest north of the Raststätte Grauholz on the A1/A6 motorway, close to the city of Bern. The modern hotel offers fully equipped rooms. You can relax on the sunny and quiet patio. In just 3 minutes on foot you can reach a restaurant with a sunny terrace, serving a varied menu with seasonal dishes. It belongs to the Raststätte Grauholz. You can enjoy a buffet with cold and hot drinks and seasonal fruit in the hotel hall every day between 12:00 noon and 6:00 am. Private parking is also available. There is a gas station next to the hotel.

From the Eifel via the Alps to the Dordogne in 5 great days
Literally from the start of the Eifel you go to Camping Moto van Hans in 5 crazy rides. You cross 3 countries (Germany, France and Switzerland) several times and the number of motorcycle areas is phenomenal. Eifel, Moselle, Hunsrück, Pfälzerwald, Vosges, Jura, Alps and then along France's most beautiful rivers, the Drome, Tarn, Lot and Dordogne. The number of bends is indescribable. Make sure your phone / camera has enough space, because you will rarely experience so much beauty in such a short time. Note: Driving in mountainous areas requires some experience, the journey as a whole is "spicy"
Day 1 starts in the Eifel and ends in the middle of the Vosges. With MRA it is possible to find the smallest and best roads, which are ideal for this type of route. In the evening of course eating Flammkuchen! However, this route and that of day 2 have to be careful when working on the road in France. Gravel is sprinkled on the road here and that is not always convenient for motorcyclists.
Day 2 goes partly through the Vosges, then the Jura and then you drive a long way through Switzerland. Watch out for your speed here, otherwise it could be very expensive. You don't drive through the highest part of Switzerland, but there is plenty to steer and plenty to see. Your hotel is in Martigny. You can eat in the center, which you reach after 5 minutes.
Day 3 just starts in Switzerland and soon you are on the Route des Grandes Alpes. You tackle a number of very high passes here, such as the Iseran and the Galibier. The height differences are enormous here, you drive here deep valleys and high peaks. Spending the night in Serre Chevalier (where you could theoretically have skied a few months earlier) is a very special experience.
Day 4 still has some big passes in store, after that the route runs via the Drome and the Tarn. The rivers have cut very deep gorges in the relatively soft chalk, resulting in steep mountain formations. A lust for the eye! The old monastery where the hotel is located is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a rich culinary experience.
Day 5 is the last day and takes you through the Cévennes National Park. Simply put, a very large forest, but there is more. The highest peak is 1,900 meters and the roads in the Cévennes are generally very narrow. This has the advantage that they are not used much. Ergo low-traffic and excellent quality. However, on these very narrow roads you have to watch out for the local population and "waste" from the trees. The first don't take it so well with the course of the road and you regularly see it right in front of you on your side of the road, the second occasionally causes broken branches on the road. There is a good chance that at the end you will find Hans with a big grin and a welcome beer waiting for you.
All in all a very impressive ride. All 1,824.75 kilometers (according to MRA) are delightful. The roads are good, the hotels were all excellent, there were certainly culinary delights and the undersigned was very lucky that there were hardly any clouds during all 5 days (August 2023). For the less experienced rider it is advisable to gain some knowledge in advance about riding in mountains and/or to take a rest day after the "queen stage" (day 3).
For those who are going to make the journey: lots of safe kilometers and lots of fun.
