RouteXpert Review
This is day 2 of a 2 day tour of Cape Breton Nova Scotia.

The Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive circles the lake along shoreline roads that offer a constantly changing panorama of forests, farms, and villages, and are ideal for walking, cycling, and birdwatching. The Scenic Drive can be driven in various ways and can be started at various locations; there is no fixed route description. We start our second day in Sydney and drive to Whycocomagh.

The region is an important breeding ground for bald eagles, and these impressive birds are often seen. We'll drive mainly along the shores of the vast lake, dotted with numerous small bays (coves). Along the way, you can enjoy the beautiful roads, small villages, and several interesting places to stop, marked with a waypoint and/or point of interest.

Goat Island: Discover authentic Mi'kmaq culture along our picturesque 2.4-kilometer trail on Goat Island in Eskasoni. The island is located on beautiful Bras d'Or Lake. You'll be guided along the trail by a Mi'kmaq cultural interpreter who will take you to various villages, each offering a unique experience to learn about and participate in this way of life.
You can:
Participating in a sweeping ceremony
Learn how to bake a cake over an open fire
Learning to weave baskets
Learning traditional dances
get information about hunting and fishing techniques
There is also the opportunity to try a traditional snack of luskinigan with tea.
Tour costs:
$40.00 per person for adults
$20.00 per youth under 10
$250.00 group price (maximum 20 participants)

We cross Barra Strait via the bridge on the Grand Narrow Highway; on your left, you'll see the railway bridge. The Grand Narrows Bridge is a Canadian railway bridge that crosses Victoria County, Nova Scotia, and Cape Breton County. At 516.33 m long, it is the longest railway bridge in the province. The bridge has a revolving section at its eastern end to allow shipping through Barra Strait.

After crossing the bridge, we stop at the Nova Scotia Highland Village Museum, an open-air living history museum and Gaelic folklore center that showcases the story, culture, and identity of Nova Scotia's Gaels. Eleven historic buildings are staffed by costumed actors passionate about sharing Gaelic culture and identity. They also host special events and programs throughout the year.

We'll drive around the small peninsula, where you can stop at Washabuck Beach for a refreshing dip or to enjoy the beautiful beach and views. Iona Port Beach and St. Columbia Parish are also worth stopping for a photo.

After crossing Barra Strait again, we drive north with the coastline on our left and the mountains on our right, stopping for a quick snack. Don't eat too much here, as we'll be stopping for lobster further on!

Stop for photos at Groves Point Provincial Park. We'll then drive along a scenic road along the south side of Boularderie Island. A pleasantly winding road with beautiful panoramas, we'll loop the loop and then head north again.

We cross the Great Bras d'Or Channel via the Seal Island Bridge. This beautiful steel bridge is the third-longest span in the province. It is a continuous arch design and connects Boularderie Centre, on Boularderie Island, on the south side with New Harris, on Cape Breton Island, on the north side.

At the Lobster Gallery we stop to enjoy a delicious lobster on the terrace with a beautiful view over the bay.

In Baddeck, you can visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, a small museum with the largest collection of artifacts and documents from Bell's years of experimental work in Baddeck. This museum was designated a National Historic Site in 1952.

After this last stop we drive another 40 kilometers on the Trans Canada Highway to the end point, Whycocomagh at the Fire Department.
