Route Summary
The Trans Canada Highway, also known as TCH or Highway 1, is one of the longest highways in the world, running from Victoria on Vancouver Island in the west to St. John's in Newfoundland in the east. This is part 21 that runs from Ottawa to Montreal.
The Trans Canada Highway passes through all the southern provinces of the country. The route can be driven in different ways. There are namely in various alternative routes that also belong to the TCH. The total distance is around 8,000 km. We not only drive the TCH, but will take the rural roads as much as possible, because only highway driving is too boring and Canada has many beautiful roads through its beautiful landscape.
You drive through all provinces and through very varied and scenic landscapes, from the Rockies in the West, the Central Prairies to the Eastern Maritimes and the Northern Forest.
The riding season is generally April through October with longer seasons on the west coast and southern Ontario.
Provide good all season clothing or bring rain gear, depending on the province and the season the weather can change and you may be surprised by a rain or even a snow or hail shower, so be prepared.
In Canada the metric system is used, so speeds are indicated in Km / h. A helmet requirement (DOT approved) applies throughout Canada.
You will see many wildlife throughout Canada. your similar animals from province to province, such as deer, buffalos, moose, caribou, wolves, pumas, bears, mountain goats, sheep, lynx, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, badgers, various rodents and all kinds of birds.
Even if it is very tempting to stop for a photo, don't do it, it can be very dangerous.

Day 21 runs the route from Ottowa to Montreal. The route via the Trans Canada Highway is short and boring, so those who want to get to their destination in 2 hours can take the TCH ON-417, a 4-lane highway, to Montreal from Ottowa. But we want to drive beautiful roads and see something different than cars, trucks and campers so we drive a different route, we follow the course of the Ottawa River as much as possible with beautiful curves, beautiful panoramas, beautiful nature, small villages, but also beaches and some beautiful sights to visit.
Shortly after departure we drive past RP2 to the Parliament of Canada. Truly beautiful architecture, a small park with the Centennial Flame, so definitely a nice place to stop for some pictures.
If you drive out of the city, it is in any case enjoy the beautiful architecture, parks and bridges. Just outside the city we stop at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum (RP6), this museum was founded in 1964 at RCAF Station Rockcliffe as the National Aeronautical Collection from the amalgamation of three separate existing collections. These included the National Aviation Museum in Uplands, which focused on early aviation and bush flying; the Canadian War Museum collection, which focused on military aircraft, which included many war trophies, some of which date from World War I, and the RCAF Museum, which focused on those aircraft operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Well worth a visit.
After the museum visit we drive via the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway along the Ottowa River, from the road you cannot see the river, but the road itself passes through a beautiful green area, after about 7 kilometers we turn onto St Joseph Boulevard and we drive to Petrie Islands (RP9).
Petrie Island is an island of parks and recreation areas located on the Ottawa River in the eastern part of the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The island has several nearby islands and the general collection of islands is also called Petrie Island. It is a nice place to rest and enjoy nature and beaches.
We continue the drive to Cumberland Heritage Village Museum (RP10), this museum offers an immersive and educational experience that shows life in the 1920s and 1930s with dozens of heritage and reproduction buildings from the era. Cumberland Heritage Village Museum always offers a unique experience that encourages you to play in the past and create memories for the future.
We continue the drive on Ottawa Regional Road 174 to Jessup Falls, where the South Nation River crosses through a beautiful steel bridge construction. On the other side is a small park on the other side of the river, if you want to take a break.
After the bridge we turn left and take Route 21 and Concession Road 1 which follows the river through a beautiful green and rolling landscape. Along this winding route you see beautiful houses and occasionally you also have a view of the river. We continue to Hawkesbury (RP16), this is a good place for lunch, there is a wide choice of restaurants and fast food chains. There is also a Harley-Davidson dealer (RP17) for the enthusiasts.
On the north side, continue to follow the river over the Rte Des Outaouais, stopping briefly at the Carillon generator and dam (RP19), a hydroelectric power plant on the Ottawa River near Carillon, Quebec, Canada. Built between 1959 and 1964, it is operated and managed by Hydro-Québec. It is a generator station with an installed capacity of 752 megawatts (1,008,000 hp), a head of 17.99 meters (59.0 ft) and a reservoir of 26 square kilometers (10 square miles).
We continue the drive via QC-344 to RP20 the Parque National D'Oka, this park has a rich historical and natural heritage. The Calvaire, with its four oratories and three chapels, is a unique complex of historic buildings in America. In Grande Baie and Rivière aux Serpents, land and water come together to produce ecological jewels: the wetlands. In both winter and summer, the summit of the Calvaire d'Oka trail offers exceptional views of the Lac des Deux Montagnes and the Adirondacks. There are also beautiful beaches so you can also relax here before driving the last 50 kilometers to Montreal. This park is wonderfully relaxing and beautiful.
The last stop of this 5 ***** Star route is Montreal. We were able to enjoy the beautiful roads, beautiful surroundings and a number of beautiful museums and other sights. Now it's time to immerse ourselves in bustling Montreal. Definitely a city to also plan one or two extra days.

Trans Canada Highway
The Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) or Trans-Canadian Highway is a system of highways that cover all 10 provinces of Canada.
The Federal and Provincial Highways System that now forms the TCH were authorized by the Trans-Canada Highway Act of 1948 and opened in 1962. It was completed in 1971. The total length of the TCH is 7821 km.
Contrary to the American Interstate Highway System, the TCH does not consist of an unambiguous network of motorways, but forms a network of restricted access highways and other main routes that are more akin to the Dutch provincial roads. The route is indicated by a green shield with a white maple leaf.
The numbering of the roads that are part of the TCH is the domain of the provinces. Only the western provinces have aligned their numbering and the TCH has the designation Highway 1 there.
The main route of the TCH starts in Victoria in British Columbia and runs via Calgary and Regina to Winnipeg. From Winnipeg the route leads to Kenora in Ontario, after which several branches pass through Ontario to Ottawa.
Further east, the route passes through the province of Quebec via Montreal and Quebec, among others, to Moncton, New Brunswick. Then the TCH continues east through Nova Scotia, where a branch (via the Confederation Bridge) leads to Prince Edward Island. Another section runs down to the sea in the port city of Sydney, where a ferry service leaves for Channel-Port aux Basques on the island of Newfoundland. From there the route continues for more than 900 km to the provincial capital of St. John's, in the extreme southeast of the island.
