Freiburg
My suggestions: Murten: Visit the castle with a view of the city of Murten and the lake. The circular wall is also highly recommended. Avenches: Visit the amphitheater.
-Our route begins at the “Shopping Center Westside” (near Bern). The starting point with a gas station, gas station shop (drinks, food, car accessories), motorway connection and toilet is therefore ideal.
-Away from the busy roads, we drive comfortably towards “Laupen”. There would be an opportunity to visit a castle here. The Knight's Hall can be rented for private events.
LAUPEN CASTLE:
The opening times are very variable; if you register in advance, it is even possible to get a visit appointment outside of the regular opening hours. You can find the regular opening times here: Stiftung Schloss Laupen - Welcome (stiftung-schlosslaupen.ch)
Please direct inquiries to +41 31 740 10 60 (0317407060)
We continue towards “Gurmels”, from here the road becomes narrower and we drive along the “Schiffenensee”. Unfortunately, we rarely see this reservoir on this section because the trees often block the view of the lake. We continue to “Freiburg”. To do this, we drive over the “Poya Bridge”, which opened in 2014. This cable-stayed bridge relieves the city of “Freiburg” of traffic. After the bridge we turn right and shortly afterwards we turn right. Almost a 360 degree turn. Now we can see the bridge we just drove on.
FREIBURG:
was founded in 1157 on the rocky ridge surrounded by the Saane. The city is bilingual. French and German. One of the things worth seeing here is the old town with its buildings ---
We quickly reach the old town of “Freiburg” and cross an old wooden bridge. Now it's time for us to treat ourselves to a coffee or something else to drink.
Now we drive over a bridge again and after about 1 kilometer we reach a large parking lot and drive all the way to the top. (Note the sign with a temporary driving ban) If we're lucky, we've just caught a passable time window in which we can drive up the cobblestone street.
IF THAT'S NOT THE CASE: Skip the next waypoint (unfortunately we miss a beautiful view of the bridge and Freiburg) and would drive through the “Bürglentor”.
We continue to Marly. There are 2 circular entrances here that are almost built into each other. Shortly afterwards you go up a wide road and turn right to “Arconciel”. Continue towards Rossens. (Here one possibility would be to shorten the route by about 8o kilometers. Information for motorcyclists: if you take the shortcut you will miss a beautiful section of road, Mudon to Possens. On the right we see the “Lac de Gruyère” (Lake Gruyère)
LAC DE GRUYERE:
This reservoir is probably the most beautiful reservoir in Switzerland. At the northern end there was a small chapel that was just above lake level. In dry summers, however, the lake level drops significantly.
We continue towards “Romont”. I decided that we wouldn't drive through Bulle and take the highway for a moment. Just until the next exit. “Bulle” is a larger place than “Murten” “Avenches” “Romont” and therefore does not offer the same charm as the other towns. But “Bulle” also has its points.
ROMONT:
This medieval city is located on a hill and offers a lot of sights. For example: Gothic Church, Swiss Museum of Stained Glass, City Wall...
We soon see a metal elephant from Art Metall at Chesalles sur Moudon. We drive down a winding road to “Moudon”. After “Moudon” it goes up again with a few quick curves through the Val Sottens.
After a while we drive right along Lake Neuchâtel and then reach Avenches. Here we see, among other things, the amphitheater.
AVENCHES:
This village is also built on a hill. “Avenches” was the capital of Roman Helvetia. There are various Roman sights here. One of them is the amphitheater, where the Rock Oz'Arènes festival takes place every year.
Now we drive on to “Murten”. In my opinion the highlight of the sightseeing on this route. Go into the castle to see the city and the curtain wall from the top. Also go to the circular wall. (Until now 2023, this is free)
If you would like to eat a cake or something from a pastry shop, go to the “Züger” tearoom pastry shop, for example.
(The Confiserieüger was taken over by Beeler, so the name could change to Beeler) If you would rather eat something………… different experience, go to the “Chesery” restaurant
MURTEN:
A very beautiful and well-preserved old town, in the old small houses there are boutiques and restaurants. The city was founded in this form around the year 1170. The very well-known Christmas market takes place every year before Christmas. The castle and curtain wall should definitely be visited.
We continue to Mont Vully, from here you have a beautiful view of Lake Murten and Murten and, on the northwest side, the Seeland and the Jura. At the end we drive towards “Neuenburgersee” and straight on towards “Erlach” on “Lake Biel”
ERLACH:
A beautiful little town, you could also make a stop here. If you want to stay longer, visit “Saint Peter’s Island”. There is a monastery hotel on the island. The island became famous through the visit of the Geneva philosopher Jean-Jaques Rousseau (1712-1778). Other personalities visited the poet's island: JW Goethe, ex. Empress Josephine Bonaparte and the kings of Prussia, Sweden and Bavaria.
We continue to Aarberg, where our journey ends. Enjoy a coffee or whatever you like here. There is also the possibility to refuel nearby. But not in the old town.

Avenches

Aarberg

From the Eifel via the Alps to the Dordogne in 5 great days
Literally from the start of the Eifel you go to Camping Moto van Hans in 5 crazy rides. You cross 3 countries (Germany, France and Switzerland) several times and the number of motorcycle areas is phenomenal. Eifel, Moselle, Hunsrück, Pfälzerwald, Vosges, Jura, Alps and then along France's most beautiful rivers, the Drome, Tarn, Lot and Dordogne. The number of bends is indescribable. Make sure your phone / camera has enough space, because you will rarely experience so much beauty in such a short time. Note: Driving in mountainous areas requires some experience, the journey as a whole is "spicy"
Day 1 starts in the Eifel and ends in the middle of the Vosges. With MRA it is possible to find the smallest and best roads, which are ideal for this type of route. In the evening of course eating Flammkuchen! However, this route and that of day 2 have to be careful when working on the road in France. Gravel is sprinkled on the road here and that is not always convenient for motorcyclists.
Day 2 goes partly through the Vosges, then the Jura and then you drive a long way through Switzerland. Watch out for your speed here, otherwise it could be very expensive. You don't drive through the highest part of Switzerland, but there is plenty to steer and plenty to see. Your hotel is in Martigny. You can eat in the center, which you reach after 5 minutes.
Day 3 just starts in Switzerland and soon you are on the Route des Grandes Alpes. You tackle a number of very high passes here, such as the Iseran and the Galibier. The height differences are enormous here, you drive here deep valleys and high peaks. Spending the night in Serre Chevalier (where you could theoretically have skied a few months earlier) is a very special experience.
Day 4 still has some big passes in store, after that the route runs via the Drome and the Tarn. The rivers have cut very deep gorges in the relatively soft chalk, resulting in steep mountain formations. A lust for the eye! The old monastery where the hotel is located is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a rich culinary experience.
Day 5 is the last day and takes you through the Cévennes National Park. Simply put, a very large forest, but there is more. The highest peak is 1,900 meters and the roads in the Cévennes are generally very narrow. This has the advantage that they are not used much. Ergo low-traffic and excellent quality. However, on these very narrow roads you have to watch out for the local population and "waste" from the trees. The first don't take it so well with the course of the road and you regularly see it right in front of you on your side of the road, the second occasionally causes broken branches on the road. There is a good chance that at the end you will find Hans with a big grin and a welcome beer waiting for you.
All in all a very impressive ride. All 1,824.75 kilometers (according to MRA) are delightful. The roads are good, the hotels were all excellent, there were certainly culinary delights and the undersigned was very lucky that there were hardly any clouds during all 5 days (August 2023). For the less experienced rider it is advisable to gain some knowledge in advance about riding in mountains and/or to take a rest day after the "queen stage" (day 3).
For those who are going to make the journey: lots of safe kilometers and lots of fun.

Grand Tour of Switzerland
'The Grand Tour of Switzerland' leads past the most beautiful sights in the country.
Switzerland is a wonderful country to cross by motorcycle. Not only because of the beautiful roads, but also because of the cultural and other sights - and of course the beautiful mountains! The country has enormous diversity. Mountains and water in particular determine the landscape. Lake Constance in the north is one of the most popular holiday regions in Central Europe. With Lake Geneva in the far southwest, the Swiss (along with the French) also have one of the largest lakes on the continent. Don't forget Lake Maggiore in the south, although the red flag with the white cross only flies over a small part of it. There the influence of Italy becomes clear again. It is mainly based on language. This also applies to Lake Lugano, in the far south. This panoramic road, called the Grand Tour of Switzerland, is more than 1600 km long. Fans of mountain passes will be happy in many places. The route takes you to the Schwägalp, the San Bernardino and the Gotthard Pass. Divided into eight rides, it is a unique road trip.
