This route from Cáceres in Extremadura to Benavente in Castile and León is a route through the lesser known part of Spain. Beautiful small quiet roads through sometimes surprising nature. A highlight is the visit to the Valle del Jerte, a surprisingly green valley.
I gave this route 5 stars because the surroundings and nature keep surprising you. The roads are well maintained and offer, perhaps against expectations, a lot of variety. This is a long route, an early start is recommended.
Please note the last part of the route goes through a very remote part of Spain. There are few petrol stations here. If the route takes longer than expected the A-66 from Salamanca towards Zamora is a fast alternative to get to Benavente.

Salamanca
After 2 hours of wonderful steering, it is time for lunch on the descent to Béjar. Near one of the oldest Plaza de Toros in Spain, known locally as the "La Ancianita", La Alegría del Castañar - Casa Senén is a nice place for lunch.
After 90km through a changing landscape you enter the suburbs of Salamanca. The old Roman bridge, a reminder of the city's early history, that you see on your right as you cross the river is not the first thing you see of this city. The medieval buildings in the historic center attract attention from afar. The university, founded in 1218, is the oldest university in Spain. The historic university building and library are impressive.
In addition, the two cathedrals, the Catedral Viaja and the Catedral Nueva, are architectural gems. The old town may seem inviting for a little exploration, but the small narrow streets clog quickly and are often a one-way street.
After Salamanca the route heads towards the border area between Spain and Portugal. Peace returns again. The bridge over the Río Duero is definitely worth a photo.
The last part of the route goes without major detours to Benavente. Benavente is a charming town in the province of Zamora, located in the autonomous region of Castile and León, in northwestern Spain. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, Benavente offers a unique blend of historical heritage, natural beauty and traditional gastronomy.
