RouteXpert Review The Yorkshire Dales has many moods; it can be wild and windswept or quietly tranquil. Each valley or 'dale' has its own distinct character, set against expansive heather moorland tops.
The first section has some great views as it travels across the big open spaces with an almost mandatory stop for a photo of the Ribblehead Viaduct. The route leaves the high moorland and meanders it's way across the the lower ground that keeps the two moors separated, this is primarily farm land and pretty villages. The route uses the A9 for a short distance and as soon as you leave it on the northern edge of the North York Moor, you start climbing again. The NYM somehow feels different to the Dales and you get a sense that you are near the coast. That becomes clear as you pass Guisborough and get a glimpse of the sea. Whitby is next and is an ideal lunch stop for fish and chips.
Whitby Abbey was inspirational when Bram Stoker wrote Dracula in 1897. While staying in Whitby, Stoker would also have heard of the shipwreck five years earlier of a Russian vessel called the Dmitry, from Narva. This ran aground on Tate Hill Sands below East Cliff, carrying a cargo of silver sand. With a slightly rearranged name, this became the Demeter from Varna that carries Dracula to Whitby with a cargo of silver sand and boxes of earth.
The return journey is a reverse of the outward leg but this time the route travels through the south of both national parks, equally as nice and great riding roads. Both of the parks are popular with motorcyclists and this route shows why.
