RouteXpert Review
This trip is based on the routes that Marc Telkamp drove in 2009 during his tour of the Czech Republic. The routes may differ from the original due to map changes and daily distances. The Czech Republic has many striking buildings, including the 2 that you will visit in this route. But there are also many beautiful buildings in the city of Liberec, so a route with 3 viewings.
First you come, after a nice route along the river Smědá, this is a river in the Czech Republic and Poland. A tributary of the river Neisse with a length of 51.9 km. The river flows from the three streams in the Jizera Mountains in the Czech Republic, near the castle of Frýdlant.
The castle of Frýdlant rises on a basalt rock above the river Směda. This large and architecturally complex medieval castle is one of the most important monuments in the Czech Republic. The castle was opened to tourists as early as 1801, making it the first castle museum in Central Europe. In addition to the usual collections of castle furniture and equipment, the exhibit also includes an extensive collection of weapons, pipes, a unique gentleman's desk, a children's room, a castle bathroom and a preserved kitchen.
There is a parking lot and a cafe at the castle, so every reason to stop and visit the castle.
After the tour it continues and meander through some small villages Liberec, Liberec is the capital of the region of the same name Liberec, better known as North Bohemia. The city is beautifully situated at the foot of the Jizera Mountains, near the border triangle with Germany and Poland. This mountain range, which is located in the north of the country on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic, is part of the western Sudetes. With over 100,000 inhabitants, it is the fifth largest city in the Czech Republic. As the former textile capital of the Czech Republic, Liberec has a rich history and architecture.
After you have also explored Liberec up close, it continues to Ještěd, Ještěd (German: Jeschken), at 1,012 meters, is the highest mountain in the Jeschken Mountains. On top of the mountain is a television tower, restaurant and hotel. The Ještěd television tower is not just any television tower. The Ještěd television tower is definitely one of the top ten architectural highlights.
The Ještěd has a long history as a mountain; in 1844 the first mountain hut was built on the top. The construction of the mountain hotel took place in 1906. In 1963 the hotel burned down. Construction of the current Ještěd tower started in 1966, and construction was completed in 1973.
The remarkable structure serves as a television tower, but also houses a restaurant and a hotel. The tower is a natural continuation of the mountain, as it were. In 1998, the tower was also given the status of a cultural monument.
The Ještěd Tower can only be reached on foot or by cable car and once you have reached the top you have a phenomenal view, not only over North Bohemia and Liberec, but also over Poland and Germany!
Tip, reserve a table in the restaurant in the tower.
After the visit and lunch in the tower, you will head back to the hotel, where you will have enough time to take a ride in the bobsleigh or explore Harrachov.
This route, with 3 viewings, is definitely worth the effort. But also the route, even though it is only 130 KM is fun to drive, that's why I rate this route with 4 stars.
