The Waldnaabaue first became the focus of conservation almost 25 years ago when plans were made public for a huge reservoir west of Tirschenreuth ("Gumpenspeicher"), which would have to flood the entire Waldnaab floodplain west of Tirschenreuth. However, this project failed in the early 1980s after it became clear how important the Waldnaabaue is for the protection of species and habitat and especially for avifauna. In the period that followed, the conservation authorities began to think about how to protect the Waldnaabaue area in the long term. This eventually led to an application for inclusion in the funding program "Large-scale nature conservation projects of nationally representative importance", which was submitted as client in 1998 by the Tirschenreuth district council.
We drive past beautiful Czech villages where there is also the possibility to stop briefly to have a drink and or eat or to stretch our legs. A number of options are included as POI along the route.
One of the villages that is definitely worth a visit is Rožmberk nad Vltavou, located in the wooded and hilly area of South Bohemia. the village is best known for the Rožmberk nad Vltavou castle.
The village has its origins in the thirteenth century AD, when the powerful Rožmberk family settled here. The Rožmberk nad Vltavou Castle is still today one of the most beautiful castles in the Czech Republic. From the castle, the Rožmberk family oversaw their estates in this region. They have resided here for no less than four centuries. The castle is located on a hill, so from the castle you look out over the village of less than four hundred inhabitants.
The castle consists of two parts: the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several alterations and renovations. In the nineteenth century, the then owners, the Buquoy family, gave the castle a neo-Gothic look. Since then, the castle has been open to the public. Check the castle's website carefully when you can enter, because the castle has limited opening hours, especially in the winter months. You can choose from two tours or do both. You can also visit the English tower via two hundred stairs. From the tower you have a beautiful view of the surroundings.
The village itself is located on the Vltava (in Czech: Vltavou). This river makes for a picturesque picture. In the village there are some guest houses, a post office and about a hundred houses. The Gothic Saint Nicholas Church is also very prominent. Documents show that a church stood here as early as 1271. The current church dates from the second half of the fifteenth century.
After this stop, it is only a 15-minute drive to the end point in Vyšší Brod, a small town in the Czech region of South Bohemia. The town is close to Lake Lipno on the Vltava River. Tourists often visit the Cistercian monastery, which also houses the Postal Museum, see POI “Cisterciácký klášter Vyšší Brod”.
