Route Summary
This route collection along the Dutch Country Houses & Castles consists of 14 routes. These country houses and castles have been used as a framework to plot the beautiful routes, but the routes remain worthwhile even without visiting the described objects. But of course the route has added value if you stop here and there and take a walk. Not all manors and castles are open to visitors, but these can be spotted from the public road or their garden or park is open to visitors.
The route is for the most part on country roads, the busier N-roads and urban areas are avoided as much as possible. The length of the routes has been kept below 175 km, partly because the average speed will not be that high on many 60 km roads.
Almost every province has one or more routes, only in South Holland and the Flevopolders no routes have been set out because there were no country houses and castles that were eligible for this tour due to their location.
Starting point: Carpool Wezep (Along A28)
End point: De Vanenburg Castle, Putten

RouteXpert Review
Gelderland has even more country houses than Overijssel, therefore Gelderland is the largest province in the Netherlands (5,136.31 km²) just slightly larger than North Brabant (5,082.06 km²). So we are making more routes in this province, so that there is still time to get off here and there. Now there are quite a few in the forest and along dirt roads, so that limits the number again, so we can manage with three routes! The first route is in the triangle Zwolle, Apeldoorn and Amersfoort. The start of the route is the Carpoolplaats on the A28 near Wezep. After only five kilometers the first country house.Vollenhof Estate
Zuiderzeestraatweg 415, 8091 PA, Wezep
The Vollenhof mansion was built in the first half of the nineteenth century, in neoclassical style. The stately white house with the blinds is remarkably shallow and therefore smaller than the first glance suggests.
At the Zande we will follow the IJssel to Veessen and at Heerde after 42 km our next goal.
Estate Bonenburg
Bonenburgerlaan, 8181 HA Heerde
The house and the estate bear the name of squire Van Boinenburg. He had the original house built in the 17th century. The estate is private property and cannot be visited.
We continue the route via the IJsseldijk and the Bandijk to Twello and then on a stretch of 1.5 km we get three country houses.
Hunderen House
Hunderenslaan 7, 7391 TB Twello
Huize Hunderen is a monumental building and dates from the 17th century. The house and the accompanying coach house were made suitable for habitation by elderly people with memory problems in 2015. An amendment to the zoning plan made it possible to realize nineteen independent residential care units for elderly people with dementia.
House of Kruisvoorde
Kruisvoorderweg 16, 7391 TA Twello
Originally "Huize Kruisvoorde" was a manor. The front wing was added to the building in the 18th century. In the 19th century the building was plastered, which was removed again at the beginning of the 20th century. The square tower on the northeast side was added in the early 20th century. This tower was hit by a shell on April 12, 1945, during the liberation by the Canadian troops. The building was slightly damaged. Kruisvoorde was registered in 1971 as a national monument in the monument register. The rod division of the windows is of a more recent date (1976)
The Parckelaer
Blikkenweg 8, 7391 NA Twello
Originally "de Parckelaer" was a manor. The oldest mention dates from 1434. Like the nearby manor of Kruisvoorde, the building belonged to members of the Van Mermuden family.
We follow the route to Vaassen and after 79 km of the route a castle, around which we make a round.
Cannenburch Castle
Maarten van Rossumplein 4, 8171 EB Vaassen
The castle was built on the remains of an earlier castle, the earliest mention of which dates from 1365. Traces of this former fortified house can still be seen in the basement of the current castle. In 1543 De Cannenburgh became the property of Marshal Maarten van Rossum. He had the ruins rebuilt into a stately castle, introducing the Renaissance style in Gelderland. However, he died in 1555, before the castle was finished. His successor, Hendrik van Isendoorn, completed the building.
After Vaasen we go northwest again through the Veluwe and after more than 102 km of the route we arrive at a small castle in the hamlet of Staverden.
Staverden Castle Uddelermeerweg 2, 3852 PM Ermelo
The house and the park next to the house are owned by Geldersch Landschap en Kastelen and open to the public. There is also an orangery, brasserie and beer brewery on the grounds. On an island in the park is a pedestal with the text "Lenora 1353". The current castle, now the fourth, was built partly in 1853 and partly in 1905 and contains seventeenth-century elements and is built on the foundations of the previous castle, from the eighteenth century. The rooms on the ground floor are decorated with Art Nouveau motifs. No remains of the medieval castle are visible above ground level.
If we follow the route further, after more than 13 km, via Speuld and Garderen, we arrive at an estate.
(Care estate) Groot Spriel
Garderenseweg 150, 3881 NC Putten
Groot Spriel is an estate with a neo-Renaissance-style castle. The national monument was built by architect Joannes Pannevis in 1882 for Wouter Blokhuis, a returned administrator from the Indies. The Veltwijck farm used to be here. In 1913, the management passed into the hands of landlord Johan Willem van Doorninck (1887-1968), who inhabited the estate until 1968 and had it expanded. After a fire during filming in 1988, the mansion fell into disrepair. In 1996 a major renovation followed. A sale followed in 2016 with another renovation. From 2021 it will be used as a care home for people with dementia.
We stay in Putten and after 9 km we reach the end point of this route.
Castle De Vanenburgeel De Vanenburg Vanenburgerallee 13, 3882 RH Putten
Today, under the name Best Western Premier Kasteel de Vanenburg, the estate is used as conference, meeting and hotel accommodation.

"And then I think of Brabant, because there is still light burning there" and that is true, because the City of Light is in Brabant, in Eindhoven that is, but Eindhoven is also known as the match city of the Netherlands. The annual light festival (GLOW) in Eindhoven shows breathtaking lighting techniques, something you must see once.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in Limburg
Limburg, who thinks of Limburg, thinks of flan, coal mines, marl and the hill country. The coal mines have been closed for almost 40 years, the last load of coal was brought up from the Oranje-Nassau coal mine in Heerlen on 31 December and, as they say, South Limburg was transformed from Black to Green and unfortunately there is still little left. view of this period.
But not only pie, marl and coal in Limburg, but also a very beautiful province to tour by car or motorcycle and enjoy all the beauty that the province of Limburg has to offer. For this, the MyRoute app RouteXpert has put together a Top 10 of Car and Motorcycle routes for you.
