Route Summary You drive longer distances in Norway without encountering a gas station or restaurant, keep this in mind before you drive. Make sure your tank is full and bring food and drinks. Bring a few bottles of water or Camel bag and fill it up when you stop to refuel. A number of breaks have been planned along the way for refueling, eating and drinking.
You have the choice to spend the night at campsites or in hotels. Hotel prices in Norway are not particularly high and breakfast is usually included. Camping is free almost everywhere, except on private property or where camping is prohibited, indicated by prohibition signs. If you don't want to camp, there are often cabins for rent on the campsites. For a trip through Norway it is always advisable to bring a tent and other camping gear.

RouteXpert Review After about 3 kilometers drive up a lovely winding road with beautiful hairpin bends. The panorama while driving is beautiful, but keep your eyes on the road, the road is very narrow and it can be busy, even with campers. After about 4 km you will reach the Ørnesvingen Viewpoint, here we stop to enjoy the beautiful Geirangerfjord, the view here is truly phenomenal with good weather.
After the last corner, we enter the Geiranger-Herdalen protected landscape area (RP6). This area has been protected by Royal Decree since 8.10.2004. The area covers approximately 498 km2 in the municipalities of Stranda and Norddal on Sunnmøre. The purpose of the protection is threefold:
1. Provide a characteristic and beautiful fjord and mountain landscape with a rich and varied plant and animal life.
2. Provide important cultural landscapes where fjord farms, meadows and cultural monuments form an important part of the unique character of the landscape.
3. Provide geological deposits and landscape shapes.
The ride through this area is great because of the beautiful panoramas in this valley. At Eidsdal (RP8) we take the ferry to Linge. The ferry leaves every 30 minutes, the crossing takes approximately 13 minutes and costs 112 NOK (approximately € 11.00). We continue the drive along the banks of the clear blue river Valldøla to Gudbrandsjuvet (RP12).
Gudbrandsjuvet is a 5 meter narrow and 20-25 meter high ravine through which the Valldøla river flows. The waters have formed a complex of deep pits and intricate formations. The depth of the water surface is approximately equal to the depth from the ravine to the river. There is also the opportunity to have a drink in the Gudbrandsjuvet Café.
After these short stops we drive to the next and perhaps the most beautiful highlight of the day; the world famous Trollstigen!
The Trollstigen is open from May to October. Opening times depend on weather conditions. This road is one of the most visited attractions in Norway and runs along the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord. The road contains 11 hairpin bends.
But before we descend this road into the Isterdalen valley, we first stop at the modern Trollstigen Kafé (RP13). The new service building contains both cafe, souvenir shops with local handicrafts, toilets, parking lots, beautiful water surfaces, next to bridges and paths to viewing slopes. World-class architecture in harmony with nature.
Take time to admire the beautiful winding road down, the surrounding landscape and waterfalls. View the different vantage points from which you can take beautiful photos. In the café you can of course also have a drink and / or eat.
After this break we get on again and the descent of the Trollstigen can begin. Drive slowly and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with its waterfalls. Pay attention to the road because it is busy. There are a few places along the way where you can stop to take a picture. And if you have the time, drive up and back again.
We drive around the Romsdalsfjorden to Åfarnes (RP18), where we take the ferry to Sølsnes. The ferry leaves every 40 minutes, the crossing takes about 13 minutes and the price is about 112NOK (€ 11.00). We leave the ferry and drive along the coast and descend to the beautiful Bolsøy Bridge (RP20) which takes us via the island of Bolsøya to Molde.
The Bolsøy Bridge is a concrete beam bridge that crosses the Bolsøysund strait between the mainland and the island of Bolsøya. The Bolsøy Bridge was opened in 1991 as part of County Road 64 and, together with the Fannefjord Tunnel, forms a ferry-free connection from the town of Molde and Bolsøya Island to the mainland village of Nesjestranda. The 555 meter long bridge has 11 spans, the longest of which is 55 meters long and the maximum distance from the sea is 16 meters.
We drive mostly along the coast of the Frænfjorden (RP21) and Harøyfjorden (RP22) with beautiful views to Bud (RP23), where we stop to refuel.
After this we drive to the next highlight of the day; the “Atlanterhavsvegen” or “The Atlantic Road” which with its 8 beautiful bridges connects the islands from Averøy to Vevang and Eide to the mainland, Kristiansund and Molde. Work started on August 1, 1983 and the opening was on July 7, 1989. The road is 8.3 kilometers long and crosses various islands and the archipelago. Today this is also a tourist route. There are several parking spaces along the route where you can stop to take pictures of these beautiful bridges.
Kristiansund is the end of this beautiful day.
