RouteXpert Review
On day 18 we leave Aspen early because we have a drive of almost 400 kilometers ahead of us. We drive through the Rocky Mountains to Denver. The first part of the route we drive over the Top of the Rockies Scenic and as the name suggests this beautiful route goes over the mountain tops, some parts of the route are well above 3000 meters and you never drive below 2700 meters, so Chances are you'll see some snow along the way. Also keep in mind that the temperature can drop considerably. The Top of the Rockies offers two options for driving, we drive the longer route, but you can choose to take the shorter route from Leadville, which saves about 60 kilometers and at least 1½ hours drive. There are several places of interest along the route and if you want to visit them, you will need at least 2 days to drive this route to Denver. More information about the sights and the two options can be found at the links in this review.
We drive over several passes with beautiful views of the mountains, valleys and lakes. The roads are of good quality and after every bend you are surprised with a new panorama. Along the route are several lookout points where you can stop to enjoy the beautiful view, you also have the option to explore the area on hiking trails. You will drive through beautiful natural parks such as Pike National Forest, San Isabel National Forest and White River National Forest. These parks also offer opportunities to undertake activities. It is often very busy on weekends and holiday season.
Along the route are a number of nice places to stop for lunch or for a walk, such as in Vail, where lunch is planned. Vail is one of the better-known and largest ski resorts in North America. Vail Ski Resort is the third largest US ski resort and is comparable to the larger European ski resorts. It is also a very chic ski resort and the center resembles a ski resort in Germany or Austria, with its beautiful architecture based on Bavaria and Austria.
Vail is not an old mining town, but a new town built with skiing and Bavaria in mind. The architect Carel Vail was inspired by mountain villages in Bavaria, Vail built the small town full of lodges, hotels, restaurants and shops with classic Eastern European architecture. Siebert, and fellow designers such as Earl Eaton, wanted to ensure that Bavaria's Alpine atmosphere extended beyond the ski slopes themselves by creating an entire village reminiscent of Austrian and German culture. The restaurants also serve traditional dishes from these regions. You really imagine yourself in Europe.
You will also see abandoned Ghost Towns along the way, South Park City is one such Ghost Town that is well worth a visit. In the 1800s, when gold was discovered in South Park, hordes of prospectors moved to South Park to set up camps that grew into communities. When the mines dried up, people moved on, leaving their cities and camps to turn into ghost towns. South Park City is an example of early cities. It is now a museum that accurately depicts a mining town between 1860 and 1900. Forty-four authentic buildings are filled with more than 60,000 objects.
The end point of this day is in Denver, a large city that has a lot to offer. So an extra night is recommended. We spend the night in one of the many hotels that the city has in the Lower Downtown District. This is considered the best Denver area to stay in. The neighborhood is made up of older warehouse-style buildings east of the station and newer buildings to the west, all filled with some of Denver's best restaurants, boutiques, bars, and hotels. It's not the cheapest part of Denver, but you're right in the middle of it, great food, sports and performances, nightlife and the most vibrant parts of the city.

About this region
Colorado is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It encompasses most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. Colorado is the eighth most extensive and 21st most populous U.S. state. The 2020 United States Census enumerated the population of Colorado at 5,773,714, an increase of 14.80% since the 2010 United States Census.
The region has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 13,000 years, with the Lindenmeier Site containing artifacts dating from approximately 9200 BC to 1000 BC; the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains was a major migration route for early peoples who spread throughout the Americas. "Colorado" is the Spanish adjective meaning "ruddy," the color of red sandstone. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners. Colorado is noted for its vivid landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, and desert lands. Colorado is one of the Mountain States and is a part of the western and southwestern United States.
Denver is the capital and most populous city in Colorado. Residents of the state are known as Coloradans, although the antiquated "Coloradoan" is occasionally used. Colorado is a comparatively wealthy state, ranking eighth in household income in 2016, and 11th in per capita income in 2010. It also ranks highly in the nation's standard of living index. Major parts of the economy include government and defense, mining, agriculture, tourism, and increasingly other kinds of manufacturing. With increasing temperatures and decreasing water availability, Colorado's agriculture, forestry and tourism economies are expected to be heavily affected by climate change.
