RouteXpert Review
On day 72 of “The Ultimate USA Road Trip” we drive from Marinette to Milwaukee. We drive via a detour through the "Bloch Oxbow State Natural Area" to Preshtigo. This nature reserve is a critical habitat for several sensitive bird species. A colony of great blue herons and a large colony of sand martins can also be found here. The Preshtigo River flows through this area.In Peshtigo we make a short stop at the “Peshtigo Fish Viewing Platform” at the dam in the Peshtigo River. The viewing platform offers a panoramic view of the river below, the dam and the large school of walleye. Downstream of the dam in the Peshtigo River, the wooden platform rises 50 meters above the water. Just below, schools of walleye move into the shallows to spawn.
The town of Peshtigo is known for the devastating fire that destroyed the town and the surrounding area on October 8, 1871. In the city you can visit the “Fire Museum & Cemetary”. This museum preserves the legacy of the “Peshtigo Fire”, which killed more than 2,000 people. It houses stories, exhibits of artifacts, depictions of the lifestyle at the time of the disaster, and a cemetery to remember the dead. The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
We stop for a coffee and a snack at the “Dockside of Oconto”, they offer great food in a friendly atmosphere. Located in Oconto's "Breakwater Park" where the Oconto River meets the Green Bay bay. A nice place to rest and enjoy the view over the river and bay. Open Tuesday - Saturday from 11am - 9pm.
Along the route we pass several nature parks and it is certainly an option for enthusiasts to plan a longer visit to a park and enjoy the surroundings. One option is the “LH Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve” on Lakeview Drive in Suamico. This nature preserve has 920 acres of forest, meadows, and wetlands, where prehistoric Native American tribes once hunted, fished, and camped. It is home and refuge to a wide variety of waterfowl, wildlife and plant species. Visit the West Shores Interpretive Center on the reserve, which offers a variety of educational programs, exhibits and more than 9 miles of scenic hiking trails. It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
We stop for lunch in the town of Green Bay, one of the first European settlements in North America founded by Jean Nicolet in 1634, originally called La Baye or La Baie des Puants (French for "the bay of stinking waters").
The first summit after lunch is in Manitowoc where we visit the “Wisconsin Maritime Museum & USS Cobia”. The museum tells about the maritime history of the Big Lakes and Wisconsin. The museum was founded in 1969 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association. The USS Cobia, a Gato-class (SS/AGSS-245) submarine that served with the US Navy and was restored in 1970. In 1986, the USS Cobia became part of the museum, also became a National Historic Landmark and member of the National Register of Historic Places. The submarine has been restored and has one of the oldest operational radar systems in the world.
The museum offers tours of the USS Cobia and even overnight stays on the submarine. In addition to the USS Cobia, the museum displays the 65-ton Chief Wawatam steam engine and exhibits on Wisconsin shipbuilding and shipwrecks, a model ship gallery, children's play exhibits, and a gallery of temporary exhibits.
The USS Cobia, built by the Electric Boat Company in Groton. She was launched on 28 November 1943 and commissioned on 29 March 1944 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Albert L. Becker. The USS Cobia was designated a National Historic Landmark for her World War II service, which included service in the Pacific, where she earned four battle stars.
We drive through Harbor Town, where we score a Poker Chip at Harbor Town Harley-Davidson Dealership, continue south along the Lake Michigan shoreline to the town of Sheboygan Falls, where you can schedule a stop for drinks and shopping.
After this it is about 90 kilometers to the terminus Milwaukee, the largest city in Wisconsin and the capital of Milwaukee County. Many German immigrants settled in Milwaukee in the 19th century. These founded many beer breweries, including those of Pabst, Schlitz and Miller, the Miller Brewing Company is still located in Milwaukee. It is also home to other industries and companies such as Harley-Davidson, visit the Harley-Davidson Museum tomorrow. Enjoy downtown Milwaukee!

About this region
Wisconsin is a state in the upper Midwestern United States, bordered by Minnesota to the west; Iowa to the southwest; Illinois to the south; Lake Michigan to the east; Michigan to the northeast; and Lake Superior to the north. Wisconsin is the 25th-largest state by total area and the 20th-most populous.
Three of its largest cities are situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, these include the largest, Milwaukee, as well as Green Bay and Kenosha, the third and fourth most populated Wisconsin cities respectively. The state capital, Madison, is currently the second most populated and fastest growing city in the state. Wisconsin is divided into 72 counties and as of the 2020 census had a population of nearly 5.9 million.Wisconsin's geography is diverse, having been greatly impacted by glaciers during the Ice Age with the exception of the Driftless Area. The Northern Highland and Western Upland along with a part of the Central Plain occupies the western part of the state, with lowlands stretching to the shore of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is third to Ontario and Michigan in the length of its Great Lakes coastline. The northern portion of the state is home to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
At the time of European contact the area was inhabited by Algonquian and Siouan nations, and today is home to eleven federally recognized tribes. During the 19th and early 20th centuries many European settlers entered the state, most of whom emigrated from Germany and Scandinavia. Wisconsin remains a center of German American and Scandinavian American culture. The state is one of the nation's leading dairy producers and is known as "America's Dairyland"; it is particularly famous for its cheese. The state is also famous for its beer, particularly and historically in Milwaukee. Its economy is dominated by manufacturing, healthcare, information technology, and agriculture; specifically dairy, cranberries and ginseng. Tourism is also a major contributor to the state's economy. The gross domestic product in 2020 was $348 billion.

The ultimate Great Lakes Tour
This is a tour from Chicago to Staten Island, New York visiting the 5 Great Lakes of North America.
Starting from EagleRider Motorcycle rental at Illinois Harley-Davidson in Chicago and ending at EagleRider Motorcycle rental in Staten Island.
The Ultimate Great Lakes tour is a route through the United States and Canada to scenic destinations along Lakes Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario.
What are the Great Lakes? The Great Lakes are a series of five interconnected freshwater lakes located on the border of the United States and Canada. They are the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world by area and have sea-like characteristics such as rolling waves, strong currents, miles of sandy and rocky beaches, and distant horizons. This tour of 8 routes includes places to stop for coffee, lunch and overnight hotels. It also visits well known historic and scenic sites along the way mostly avoiding major highways. I have suggested 2 nights at Lake Superior and 2 nights at Niagara Falls, making this a 10 day tour, but of course, that is up to you. The scenery and landscapes are breathtaking and each day is different to the next. Please enjoy.

Ultimate USA road trip 08
Michel van Hagen challenged me to follow the Roadtrip of Dr. Randy Olsen as a basis to create the Ultimate USA Road Trip for the MyRoute app RouteXpert Library. I took up that challenge and started in February 2022.
The scientist Dr. Randy Olsen, who became known for using his knowledge of algorithms to find 'Waldo' in the well-known American 'Where's Waldo' book series, has been challenged by Tracy Staedter, from Discovery News, to use the same algorithm to create the perfect Road Trip by creating the US, which will visit almost every state in the US. Alaska and Hawaii are not included in this Road Trip due to their geographical location.
The following three requirements formed the basis of the route: In all 48 countries there must be at least one stop at famous points, monuments, historical sites, national parks, etc. I have added additional interesting points, beautiful tours and routes.
After more than 26 months, the job is finished and, with a lot of support from Nick Carthew, I have created 129 routes that run through the 48 states of the USA and part of Canada. This is the eighth collection that takes you from Mackinaw City in ten days through Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee to Springfield, Illinois.
