Route Summary
This is the thirteenth route of "The Ultimate USA Road Trip", a collection of routes based on the route created by scientist Dr. Randy Olsen algorithm to create the perfect USA Road Trip covering almost every US state and major US hot spots.I have further supplemented the Road Trip with even more special points that you can visit in the USA. Today we drive from Pindale via Kemmerer, home of JC Penney (of the well-known retail chain) to Rock Springs.
The route is on beautiful, good roads with beautiful panoramas. There aren't many opportunities to stop to take pictures, but there are a few interesting stops to visit museums. I therefore rate this route with 4 stars.

RouteXpert Review
On day thirteen of “The Ultimate USA Road Trip” we drive from Pinedale to southern Wyoming. The route runs through a flat landscape with mountain ranges in the distance on either side. In this area of Wyoming there are many lakes and many small rivers. The first stop is planned in the town of Big Piney at the Green River Valley Museum. This museum offers some fine exhibits ranging from Native American exhibits to the areas steeped in history. The museum offers a unique insight into the creation of Green River and its development. The gift shop offers some really nice things and the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery and visit this museum made up of three buildings with surrounding cabins.
We continue through the Big Piney area. Stop at the Big Piney Ranger District to gather some information about this area. They are also home to a wide variety of cultural and natural history, recreational opportunities, timber, range, mineral reserves, and wildlife. It contains 449,000 hectares of snow-capped peaks, lush vegetation and clear mountain lakes and streams. The district maintains 300 miles of system trails, 25 permitted summer and fall stores, 11 summer homes, and one developed campground. A longer stay to explore this beautiful nature reserve is therefore an option.
We leave the US 189 to drive via the beautiful winding Big Piney Calpet Road to the town of La Barge where we stop for lunch at the bar-restaurant Eagle Bar.
After lunch we drive to the town of Kemmerer where we visit two interesting sights. The first stop is at the Fossil Country Frontier Museum, which displays materials and exhibits about the natural and cultural history of South Lincoln County and southwestern Wyoming. This museum is run by volunteers.
Also visit the JC Penney House, it was the home of James Cash Penney, the founder of the JC Penney department stores, during the period 1904-1909. JC Penney and his wife moved to Kemmerer in 1902 and lived in the attic of a small house. It is now used as a house museum in summers.
We continue on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway to the town of Green River to score your Poker Chip at Flaming Gorge Harley-Davidson Dealer. The last part of the trip we drive part of the beautiful Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop to Rock Springs where we stay overnight in one of the many hotels.
For those who like; the entire Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop is 24 miles long and takes approximately 1.5 hours. Most of it is on a dirt road. Along the way, see wild horses and a variety of wildlife, including pronghorn, elk, deer, rabbits, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and sage fowl.

About this region
Wyoming is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. The 10th largest state by area, it is also the least populous and least densely populated state in the contiguous United States. It is bordered by Montana to the north and northwest, South Dakota and Nebraska to the east, Idaho to the west, Utah to the southwest, and Colorado to the south. The state population was 576,851 at the 2020 United States census, making it the least populated U.S. state. The state capital and the most populous city is Cheyenne, which had an estimated population of 63,957 in 2018.Wyoming's western half is mostly covered by the ranges and rangelands of the Rocky Mountains, while the eastern half of the state is high-elevation prairie called the High Plains. It is drier and windier than the rest of the country, being split between semi-arid and continental climates with greater temperature extremes. Almost half of the land in Wyoming is owned by the federal government, leading the state to rank 6th by area and fifth by proportion of a state's land owned by the federal government. Federal lands include two national parks—Grand Teton and Yellowstone—two national recreation areas, two national monuments, several national forests, historic sites, fish hatcheries, and wildlife refuges.
Original inhabitants of the region include the Arapaho, Crow, Lakota, and Shoshone. Southwest Wyoming was claimed by the Spanish Empire and then as Mexican territory until it was ceded to the U.S. in 1848 at the end of the Mexican–American War. The region acquired the name "Wyoming" when a bill was introduced to Congress in 1865 to provide a temporary government for the territory of Wyoming. The name had been used earlier for the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, and is derived from the Munsee word xwé:wamənk, meaning "at the big river flat".Wyoming's economy is driven by tourism and the extraction of minerals such as coal, natural gas, oil, and trona. Agricultural commodities include barley, hay, livestock, sugar beets, wheat, and wool. It was the first state to allow women the right to vote and become politicians, as well as the first state to elect a female governor. Due to this part of its history, its main nickname is "The Equality State" and its official state motto is "Equal Rights". It has been a politically conservative state since the 1950s, with the Republican presidential nominee carrying the state in every election since 1968. A notable exception is Teton County, which has achieved notability for being Wyoming's most Democratic county and the only county in the state to be won by a Democrat in every election since 2004.
