The route offers a nice insight into one of the largest nature reserves in Hungary. From the start in Tiszafüred to the end of the route in Félhalom you will experience the vastness of the nature reserve. You will pass some beautiful lakes and rivers. And thanks to the grasslands and swamps you can enjoy all the storks, pelicans and cranes. But the Prezwalski horses and shepherds are also spectacular.
Of course you can let all impressions sink in in one of the many Csárdás along the route, where you can enjoy all kinds of local dishes.
The route gets 3.5 stars, thanks to this wealth of beautiful nature.

The Great Hungarian Plain... aka "the Void"
The tour departs from Tiszafüred. This town is probably very old. Traces of life have been found as far back as 4,500 BC. The current town was founded in the 12th century and has continued to expand, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the time of communism, near the town (Kócsújfalu) there was a gulag, where opponents of communism were put to work in state farms. After the fall of communism, the town has slowly recovered to what it is today: the tourist center for the Hortobágyi National Park.
You drive the route clockwise. After leaving Tiszafüred, head south. The roads are straight, the landscape flat and vast. This gives you the chance to spot the many birds along the route. The area is known for the large number of storks and pelicans.
Eventually you will arrive at a ferry service, crossing the Tisza River. This river was once 1419 kilometers long. The river meanders through the Puszta, causing frequent flooding. If you have completed the tour at Neusiedlersee and Sopron, you may have also visited the castle of Széchényi István. This politician is known for his many successful reforms in Hungary. The “straightening” of the Tisza also belonged to this. Thanks to his project, the river is now about 400 km shorter. But the floods hardly ever take place anymore. So you can cross the river with peace of mind… even if the ferry looks a bit rickety.
The route heads north again, to the reservoir of the river Tisza. First you have to cross a bridge, which you have to share with a train. So pay attention… and then there is a stop at the lake. You can take a look at Jóremény-stég (pier “the good hope”). A little further on you can stop at the Lépcső Bisztró, a restaurant named after the fish ladder next to it. The artificial lake was created in the 1970s as part of the project to better regulate the Tisza River. If you feel like it, a walk down these stairs is a great way to stretch your legs. Then walk to the Kisköre kiláto nearby. After climbing this wooden watchtower, you have a beautiful distant view of the lake.
With a full belly (perhaps a Hortobagyi pancake in it?) you continue the route towards the North. Lake Tisza is always east of you. Through extensive lawns and fields you will eventually come across the Tisza River again. Here you also cross the river with a ferry. About 14 kilometers after the ferry you will come to a stop on the right side of the road. Here you can enjoy the view at ease. There is a good chance that you will also see special cattle grazing on the steppe.
The spot where you are now is also part of an area in the park, which is marked as Dark Sky Preserve. This means that it is deliberately as dark as possible here at night. You will not encounter any lighting here. Several special bird species live in the park. To protect them, it stays dark here at night. Tourism makes good use of this: in this area night walks are often organized for stargazing.
A little further along the route you can stop at the Kishortobágyi Csárda. Csárda is Hungarian for inn. In the past, the steppe was mainly used by shepherds. In order to provide them with the necessary shelter and food, a network of inns was built at an average distance of 20 kilometers from each other. This was the distance a shepherd could cover in one day. This Csárda is one of those old inns and has a distinctive architectural style. It's best to stop here if you want to get away from crowded tourist spots. If you want to know more about this architectural style and life in these inns, you can visit the Kadarcs csárda about 20 kilometers away. This inn is now a museum and shows the life of 2 centuries ago in this region.
The road, which you drive next, cuts right through the heart of the national park. Here and there you will come across stopping points where you will undoubtedly see many bird watchers peering through their binoculars from one of the many watchtowers. It is also getting busier on the route. You get closer to the village that bears the same name as the park. In the village of Hortobágy you can take a break at one of the restaurants, you can visit the information center of the park or walk around the zoo.
You will also find the Kilenclyukú híd here. This bridge (literally “the bridge with 9 holes) is the icon of the park and is frequently included in brochures as a landmark. The current bridge was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The bridge is wider at both ends than in the middle. This helped shepherds move their sheep across the bridge more easily. Fortunately, you crossed the bridge quite easily with your motorcycle and you drive the last kilometers of the route.
The route ends at the Patkós Csárda. Here you can take a short break before continuing to your hotel.
And why this motorcycle tour? Because hopefully at the end of the ride you will look back on a beautiful and relaxed motorcycle day. Although no exciting curves or spectacular mountain passes. But above all a tour through a characteristic landscape. With beautiful views and large groups of birds, sheep and cattle in the landscape.

Enjoying delicious local cuisine in one of the many csárdás (inns)

8 most beautiful tours of Hungary
Hungary... Not exactly the first country that comes to mind when you think of a motorcycle holiday. And yet it is indeed worth it. If you like varied landscapes, a rich culture, good food and quiet motor roads, then it may be time to study Hungary more closely.
With this route collection you can visit all corners of the country. You experience the past through two routes, which drive along the Iron Curtain. Watchtowers stand here as a reminder of a gray past along your route. And the heyday of the Hungarians is also discussed. The country is rich in castles, palaces and fortresses, of which a number of beautiful and special places are included in the various routes.
And of course you will get to know several nature parks and areas. Lake Balaton is of course part of the collection, but a tour around Lake Neusiedl (Fertöd Tó) is also worthwhile. Or how about riding hairpin bends in the Kelet Mecsek Nature Park or admiring special horse riders in the Hortobágyi National Park?
Historic cities are also included in the routes. Experience the Mediterranean atmosphere of Pécs, the artistic atmosphere in all the boutiques and coffee houses of Szentendre or the Roman past in Szombathely.
In short, plenty of news to experience... and in between also great motorcycling.
And the road network in Hungary? Well, over the years the quality has gotten better and better. You will drive on good asphalt for the majority of your rides. But keep in mind that the routes in this collection often seek out smaller roads. Sometimes you really have to pay attention to avoid potholes in the road.
Off to unknown territory and a great adventure!
