Taking one of the 60 hairpins...
Hotel Paulushof is a somewhat dated, but neat hotel that mainly benefits from its location on the Rursee. For those who like some variety, the Rursee and its surroundings offer more than enough. Walks, water sports, ... everything is possible. The hotel does not offer covered parking for motorcycles, but it does offer a separate car park from the road.
Immediately after starting the route, the first pins will appear and this will remain so until the end of the route. Nice long stretches on a particularly good road connect nicely with the curves that will put your driving skills to the test.
At route point 6 (25 km) you can optionally visit Monschau, one of the tourist highlights of the Eifel. In addition to beautiful half-timbered houses, the city also offers a few museums that may or may not arouse your interest. Please take a look at the links attached to this review to find more information about Monschau.
At route points 9, 11 and 12, you will continue to drift across the border into Belgium and Germany. Not that it is displayed like this on every map…. After all, as a result of the Second World War, there is a piece of no man's land here and you are now driving through it.
Route point 17 is a stop that you should not skip. Every motorcycle tourist who visits the Eifel may know the famous 'Biker Ranch'. Excellent point to stretch your legs and, depending on the time of the day, to eat a piece. The menu is fun and not expensive. And yes, the typical German 'Bratwurst mit gebacken kartoffelen' is of course available, with or without 'mit curry'.
A good dozen pins later you will arrive at route point 25 after 96 kilometers on the other side of the Rursee. You can of course enjoy the view over the Rursee from the café-restaurant 'Am Pegel' or hotel-restaurant 'Der Seehof', but you can also decide to take a boat trip on the lake here to see it from a different angle. to watch. The link to the canal cruise website is also mentioned in the list of links for this route.
After this break, the route then winds further through the Eifel, passing a Shell petrol station at route point 33.
At route point 36 you will pass an important historical monument. Today it is open to the public and houses, among other things, a conference center, but 'back in the old days' Vogelsang was a formidable military Nazi fortress where one of the three 'Adolf Hitler Schools' was located. If you take a stop, which also gives you a unique top view of the Eifel nature park, beware of any indoctrination. Maybe a little bit of caution is still needed….
At route point 37 you will pass the 'Rur. A little further on, the Rur forms the Obersee, one of the parts of this extensive water complex of 9 reservoirs that provides 80 million cubic meters of potable water for several large German cities, including Aachen for example. The Rursee in its entirety is - today - a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts. In the 60s and 70s it was completely different. Partly because of the highly polluting German mining industry, not a single fish was still living in the water of the Rur and heavy pollution was an asset. Fortunately, this is no longer the case today. In 2006, after an absence of 125 years, salmon even returned. Today, about thirty species of fish can be found in the Rursee. And of course the peripheral flora and fauna have also recovered and the Eifel has become a particularly valuable nature reserve.
You can certainly still enjoy this when you start the last bends that will bring you back to the Rursee itself and hotel Paulushof.
The route is a challenge for the lover of hilly pins and a particularly good exercise - on excellent road surfaces - for the novice motorcyclist. One will come home a little more tired than the other.
The route is also literally alongside the Belgian border and the town of Rurberg can be reached easily and quickly from Belgium. In addition, the route is not overly long and can easily be covered in half a day, if of course you omit the visits. But the route is also recommended for a multi-day stay because of its technicality and the speed with which the curves follow. Moreover, she is also located in a region that is interesting enough to stay there for several days due to various aspects and perspectives. For all these reasons above, not only the route, but also the surroundings, deserve a five-star rating.
