RouteXpert Review
In this tour you will get to know the different faces of the Ardennes. Relatively flat parts, hilly areas and height gain through real hairpin bends. Moreover, you drive through 3 countries and a unique part of German Belgium. You leave the garage of Motorhotel Bâton Rouge and head towards Vielsalm. On your right in Vielsalm you have the Lac des Doyards. The area here is hilly and you first drive on narrow roads towards the German border.
At Burg Reuland you can make a short photo stop from the ruin. Burg Reuland, in the so-called Belgian Eifel, is Belgian, but the official language in the village of the 4,000 inhabitants is German. Belgium therefore has not 2 but 3 languages.
A little further on, you cross the German border for a short distance. Once back in Belgium, the road winds gently through the east of the Ardennes. After a few kilometers you will see the monument for the border triangle Belgium-Luxembourg-Germany on the right-hand side. The real three-country point is located 100 meters to the east (left in the direction of travel) exactly under the Georg-Wagner-Brücke.
You continue on your way and soon you are riding on top of the rolling landscape. While enjoying the surrounding landscape you will drive through small villages. Once in the woods, your steering skills will be asked for the first time. You cross the border into Germany and you soon hit the first big hairpin bends. End right and you will enter Dasburg, where you will drive around the ruins.
Bridge over and you have your first well deserved coffee stop at Sam's Lounge.
You leave in a southerly direction and you follow the river Our for about 20 km. You wind through the landscape which is mainly wooded and you can't suppress a smile now and then. You cross the Our twice. First when the Our appears to be a lake and later just before Vianden. The moment you drive over the bridge you cannot miss the large Chateau de Vianden. Proud as a grown castle it flaunts atop the mountain, protecting Vianden. Vianden is a very touristic town and known to many motorcyclists. You skip a longer stay this time, but when you look at all the restaurants and so many beautiful things, you almost know for sure: I want to come back here! At the end of the road, turn right into Vianden. The beautiful asphalted road immediately turns into cobblestones, so be careful when it is a bit damp, because it can be slippery. You ride at a slow pace through the gastronomic chatter. As you take the sharp left turn, look over your left shoulder at the mighty castle one last time and think: see you next time!
You drive further and on this section you have some very nice curves, but beware, the double crash barrier is there for a reason. A little later you stop at the water reservoir you just drove around. Climb the stairs and reward yourself with a fantastic 270° view (the other 90° is water).
You continue through the undulating landscape and you string the small villages together. You get some rest when you turn onto the N7 and you follow it for about 9 km in the direction of Diekirch. From Erpeldange, where you turn right towards Michelau, you drive through the valley of the Sûre. That means water, trees, rocks and curves! In a southern bend of the Sûre at Um will's Pull you will have a delicious and well-deserved lunch.
After lunch you follow the Sûre for about 15 km. You will marvel at all that this stream valley has to offer. Beautiful views over the river, lovely forests and jagged rock walls.
At Bockholtz you say goodbye to the Sûre and a little later you notice that you are descending. Here are again a number of hairpin bends. You dance with your motorcycle through the beautiful greenery that you see on both sides of the road. After Büdersheid, it's time to give the sides of your tires a good kiss. On the fantastic Luxembourg asphalt you take one bend after the other until you arrive in Wiltz. If you think you can rest in Wiltz you are wrong, the road to Kautenbach is in front of you and you go from cheek to cheek again on the beautiful pavement.
It starts from Kautenbach! The road curls up via 7 hairpin bends and you have a regular view of the beautiful valley that you are ascending. Unfortunately, there are no real suitable places to take a picture here, but it will remain imprinted on your retina. After many wanderings and beautiful views you will return to Wiltz. We were just going east, now we keep going west. You follow the route and you arrive at a gas station. Next to the gas station is the opportunity to take a break and reflect on the fantastic violence you just left behind.
After the refreshment, continue to drive west. The view changes after you cross the border. More hilly, fields and very small allotment roads is the picture that now looms. After Houffalize you follow the Ourthe Orientale (the eastern Ourthe) and as always a natural river guarantees bends. You continue your route until La Roche en Ardenne. You take the bridge on the left and you come to a square with many restaurants. There is always a nice tent to be found.
Meandering through the rolling Belgian countryside, you drive the last kilometers to the finish Motorhotel Bâton Rouge.
Ben must have a nice beer for you and Hetty is already in the kitchen preparing another fantastic meal.
Today, in 280 kilometers, you were able to get acquainted with 3 different countries, several different environments, from mountainous, hilly, flashing along a river to farmland. You have also discovered a 3rd language in Belgium. You sit down in the garden and enjoy…

About this region
Luxembourg ( (listen) LUK-səm-burg; Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerg [ˈlətsəbuəɕ] (listen); French: Luxembourg; German: Luxemburg), officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a landlocked country in Western Europe. It is bordered by Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east, and France to the south. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is one of the four official capitals of the European Union (together with Brussels, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg) and the seat of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the highest judicial authority in the EU. Its culture, people, and languages are highly intertwined with its neighbors, making it a mixture of French and German cultures. Luxembourgish is the only national language of the country and is also considered to be the only language of the Luxembourgish people. However, in addition to Luxembourgish, both French and German are used in administrative and judicial matters, making all 3 of them the administrative languages of Luxembourg. With an area of 2,586 square kilometers (998 sq mi), it is one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe. In 2019, Luxembourg had a population of 626,108, which makes it one of the least-populous countries in Europe, but by far the one with the highest population growth rate. Foreigners account for nearly half of Luxembourg's population. As a representative democracy with a constitutional monarch, it is headed by Grand Duke Henri and is the world's only remaining sovereign grand duchy. Luxembourg is a developed country, with an advanced economy and one of the world's highest GDP (PPP) per capita. The City of Luxembourg, with its old quarters and fortifications, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to the exceptional preservation of the vast fortifications and the old city. The history of Luxembourg is considered to begin in 963, when count Siegfried acquired a rocky promontory and its Roman-era fortifications known as Lucilinburhuc, "little castle", and the surrounding area from the Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin in nearby Trier. Siegfried's descendants increased their territory through marriage, war and vassal relations. At the end of the 13th century, the counts of Luxembourg reigned over a considerable territory. In 1308, Count of Luxembourg Henry VII became King of the Germans and later Holy Roman Emperor. The House of Luxembourg produced four emperors during the High Middle Ages. In 1354, Charles IV elevated the county to the Duchy of Luxembourg. The duchy eventually became part of the Burgundian Circle and then one of the Seventeen Provinces of the Habsburg Netherlands.
Over the centuries, the City and Fortress of Luxembourg, of great strategic importance situated between the Kingdom of France and the Habsburg territories, was gradually built up to be one of the most reputed fortifications in Europe. After belonging to both the France of Louis XIV and the Austria of Maria Theresa, Luxembourg became part of the First French Republic and Empire under Napoleon. The present-day state of Luxembourg first emerged at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The Grand Duchy, with its powerful fortress, became an independent state under the personal possession of William I of the Netherlands with a Prussian garrison to guard the city against another invasion from France. In 1839, following the turmoil of the Belgian Revolution, the purely French-speaking part of Luxembourg was ceded to Belgium and the Luxembourgish-speaking part (except the Arelerland, the area around Arlon) became what is the present state of Luxembourg.Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, OECD, United Nations, NATO, and Benelux. The city of Luxembourg, which is the country's capital and largest city, is the seat of several institutions and agencies of the EU. Luxembourg served on the United Nations Security Council for the years 2013 and 2014, which was a first in the country's history. As of 2020, Luxembourg citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 187 countries and territories, ranking the Luxembourgish passport fifth in the world, tied with Denmark and Spain.
