The Netherlands is a great place for a day out by motorbike. There are many good roads and interesting areas, but you will not find really exciting roads. While you can have so much fun with a motorcycle on the small roads in a mountainous area! Fortunately, just across the border, there is soon a place where motorcyclists can indulge themselves: The Eifel!
This German area is very popular with Dutch motorcyclists. How come? Well, you don't have to drive for days to get to an area with nice roads. But the Eifel is also no punishment to start your route to further places. Moreover, there are many roads and along the routes there are plenty of accommodations where you can stay for a while.

The route starts at the Postillion Hotel along the A12 near Arnhem. You will soon cross the border into Germany and follow the A3. You will stay on this A3 for approximately 180 kilometers. Small consolation, the Ruhr area is now behind you, from now on you can drive through the interior towards the end point of this route.

Shortly after the break at the McDonalds at the end of the exit, you take the ferry across the Rhine at Linz. Make no mistake, this is quite a busy crossing. You would think that a bridge would be a better solution after all. Almost all bridges over the Rhine were destroyed in the Second World War, so that no bridges north of Basel dating from before 1945 remain. The bridges on the border between France and Germany were blown up on the French side in the autumn of 1939 after the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe. However, this did not hinder the German invasion of France. The Germans repaired most of the bridges afterwards. However, in 1944 and 1945 all bridges over the Rhine were blown up again.
Some bridges have been repaired, but the damage was so extensive that repair usually amounted to rebuilding that took years. Many bridges were only repaired in or after 1950, in the meantime there were often pontoon bridges and sometimes temporary bridges. For a long time the Oberrhein had few road bridges, before 1940 there was only one road bridge between Karlsruhe and Basel, at Kehl/Strasbourg. This situation would not improve until the 1960s.
A large number of road bridges over the Rhine were built in the 1950s and 1960s, including many cable-stayed bridges in Germany. The Rhine is least bridged between Koblenz and Mainz, where there is not a single bridge over the river over a long stretch. There are also not many bridges to the north of it, ferry services are maintained in various places.

The route winds through the beautiful rolling countryside towards the south. Just after Kolverath you pass a lookout tower called 'Eifelguck', or a view over the Eifel. From this tower you have a 360 degree view over the beautiful landscape. Nice to stop and climb the tower.

The route ends at the M13 Hotel in Riol, located on the Moselle. This hotel is run by a bunch of enthusiastic brothers who go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. They serve a good piece of food and a nice beer, certainly not unimportant.
At the hotel there is a toboggan run which is accessible from the terrace. Nice to take a ride with!
