I have further supplemented the Road Trip with even more special points that you can visit in the USA. Today we drive from Vicksburg Mississippi via Natchez to New Orleans Louisiana. It is a 530 km drive with many stops and we drive part of the beautiful winding Natchez Trace Parkway.
Many beautiful photo stops are planned along the route and there is the possibility to visit a number of beautiful sights. It is an option to do this ride in 2 days and plan an extra night in Natchez. I rate this route with 5 stars.

On day 35 of “The Ultimate USA Road Trip” we drive from Vicksburg Mississippi to New Orleans in Louisiana, better known as “The Big Easy” or “NOLA”. We drive via Natchez, a beautiful city with some beautiful museums to visit. We leave Vicksburg east towards Jackson and just before the town of Raymond we take the Natchez Trace Parkway. In the early 1800s, the Natchez Trace Parkway was a busy thoroughfare for pioneers, missionaries, and merchants. But since the 1930s, the Parkway has been restored to a beautiful scenic route, with an overwhelming choice of sights along the way.
The 715-mile American Parkway runs from Natchez across Mississippi, then follows a short stretch through the upper corner of Alabama and ends just below Nashville in Tennessee. We drive south from Raymond to Natchez, this is about 130 kilometers and you drive under curved deciduous trees on a winding road along swampy swamps. There are plenty of opportunities to stop briefly along the way to take a photo, such as at Sunken Trace, here you walk on a narrow picturesque path of only one meter wide between the tall trees and quiet nature, it looks like a scene from an old Western.
After our ride on the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway we arrive in the town of Natchez where you should definitely plan a longer stop, maybe even 1 or 2 nights, to really enjoy this city. The city has beautiful historic buildings, beautiful parks and museums.
A must is the Natchez Bluff Park Trail with spectacular views of the Mississippi River and then a 200-step wooden staircase to the base of the cliff. Part of the cliff top path passes several beautiful Victorian-era homes on Clifton Avenue. Along the trail are several information boards about the history of Natchez, which was founded in 1716. Take your time, there are benches strategically located along the trail where you can enjoy the view, the boats on the Mississippi River or watch the sunset as it sets over Louisiana.
The next stop is planned in Baton Rouge, a true paradise for history buffs. The Louisiana state capital, also known as the “Red Stick,” offers something for everyone, from ancient architecture to museums filled with treasures and delicious cuisine from around the world.
You must visit the USS Kidd Veterans Museum, where you can explore the decks and interior spaces of the USS KIDD. This WWII Fletcher class destroyer restored to its 1945 original with over 50 interior spaces to view. For the more adventurous traveler, there is the option to stay overnight aboard the USS KIDD to experience true life aboard a Navy vessel. At the Veterans Museum next door, there are displays of a P-40 aircraft, ship models, a full-size replica of the gun deck, and much more.
Visit the Old Louisiana State Capitol, which plays a pivotal role as the former state house. Until the mid-1800s, this castle-like landmark was home to the Louisiana State Legislature, but now it's a must-see museum on the list of National Historic Landmarks. Inside, explore Louisiana's rich history, see incredible art and architecture, and learn about the democratic process through exhibits, immersive theatrical presentations. The museum's gift shop offers unique souvenirs from local artists and vendors.
We cross the Mississippi to drive south on the west bank. On this winding road are many old plantations with beautiful and stately mansions. One is worth a visit as it is well known for its beautiful driveway lined with ancient oak trees and recently for the movies and video clips that were shot there.
So plan a visit to Oak Alley Plantation, a historic plantation on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana. The property was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and landscaping. More than a dozen movies, music videos and television episodes have been shot in Oak Alley's Greek Revival-style mansion and on the 25-acre property, including Beyoncé's music video "Déjà Vu" and scenes from the movie "Interview with the Vampire" from 1994. ," starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. There are guides who give tours of the property and grounds. There is also a gift shop.
We end this day in the world famous New Orleans, we spend the night in one of the many hotels. Plan an extra few days in this beautiful city and enjoy the vibrant nightlife in the French Quarter, the famous Bourbon Street and enjoy the live music, delicious food in the many restaurants and cooked in the back of a pickup truck on the street.
The Big Easy has many beautiful historic buildings and parks, including Louis Armstrong Park and take a trip down the Mississippi in an old steam-powered radar boat, this is a must and gives you a beautiful view of the river, its banks, the bridges and the city.
There is also the possibility to book excursions that give you a complete view of the city, its history and unfortunately also of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, which unfortunately are still visible.

About this region
Louisiana or La Louisiane (/lwi.zjan/) (French) is a state in the Deep South and South Central regions of the United States. It is the 19th-smallest by area and the 25th most populous of the 50 U.S. states. Louisiana is bordered by the state of Texas to the west, Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. A large part of its eastern boundary is demarcated by the Mississippi River. Louisiana is the only U.S. state with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are equivalent to counties, making it one of only two U.S. states not subdivided into counties (the other being Alaska). The state's capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibises and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of terrestrial orchids and carnivorous plants. Louisiana has more Native American tribes than any other southern state, including four that are federally recognized, ten that are state recognized, and four that have not received recognition. Some Louisiana urban environments have a multicultural, multilingual heritage, being so strongly influenced by a mixture of 18th–century French, Haitian, Spanish, French Canadian, Native American, and African cultures that they are considered to be exceptional in the U.S. Before the American purchase of the territory in 1803, the present–day U.S. state of Louisiana had been both a French colony and for a brief period a Spanish one. In addition, colonists imported numerous African people as slaves in the 18th century. Many came from peoples of the same region of West Africa, thus concentrating their culture. In the post–Civil War environment, Anglo Americans increased the pressure for Anglicization, and in 1921, English was for a time made the sole language of instruction in Louisiana schools before a policy of multilingualism was revived in 1974. There has never been an official language in Louisiana, and the state constitution enumerates "the right of the people to preserve, foster, and promote their respective historic, linguistic, and cultural origins".Based on national averages, Louisiana frequently ranks low among the U.S. in terms of health, education, and development, and high in measures of poverty. In 2018, Louisiana was ranked as the least healthy state in the country, with high levels of drug-related deaths and excessive alcohol consumption, while it has had the highest homicide rate in the United States since at least the 1990s.
