Tara canyon
The ride starts in the mountain town of Zabljak, a well-known base for adventurers in Durmitor National Park. Before starting the bike, it is wise to stop at the local supermarket (Aroma) for some groceries and to refuel at Eko. There are few places along the route to have a long lunch, but don't worry: a great picnic spot has been planned for you. Fill your bag with fresh bread, cheese and local specialties, because this day calls for a picnic with a view.
Shortly after leaving Zabljak, you will soon pass the Tara Canyon, one of the deepest gorges in Europe. The steep rock walls plunge hard into the depths, while the turquoise Tara River cuts deep beneath you. As you follow the winding road, your patience will be rewarded with beautiful views over this gigantic gorge. Feel free to stop at the bridge to take in the nature and take a few photos. Or seek out the adrenaline by taking the 2 ziplines. This is Montenegro at its best: rugged, untouched and breathtaking.
Full of renewed energy, you continue your way and soon pass the serene Otilovići Lake. Surrounded by dense forests and green hills, this lake reflects the sky like a perfect mirror on clear days. The road along the lake is winding, with every now and then an open stretch that offers you a beautiful view of the water. It is a place of peace and quiet, where you can feel completely alone, even if you are driving on the main road. In one of the hairpin bends you can stop to admire the lake and take pictures.
After about an hour of driving, it is time for the first break. You are approaching some deeply eroded bends of the Cehotina River, a quiet and secluded piece of nature that will undoubtedly enchant you. Pay close attention to your navigation, because the access road is easy to miss. On your right you will see a dirt road that bends to the left – this is your route. The gravel road is only 1.5 km long and is easy to drive on for all types of motorcycles. At the end you will find a small parking lot and a sign indicating that you have reached the perfect picnic spot. The view here is indescribable: the river meanders like a snake through the valley, while the mountains rise up like guardians on either side. A perfect place for an early lunch, with nothing but the sound of nature around you.
After the break, the route takes you along the Lim River, one of the larger rivers in Montenegro. As you drive along the banks, you can see the power of the water as it makes its way through the mountain landscape. The road remains winding, but here and there you have the chance to slow down and enjoy the view.
Before you reach Rozaje, it is time for a second break. Just outside the town lies the restaurant Hotel Duga, a nice place to relax after a long ride through the mountains. Here you can enjoy a well-deserved coffee and/or a snack. The local cuisine is known for its tasty dishes – just what you need after a long day on the bike. Don't eat too much, because you can also eat delicious food at your final destination! Let the impressions of the mountains sink in for a while and get ready for the last part of the day.
After your break, you have a choice: do you ride an extra loop through the hills east of Rozaje, or do you go straight to the end point? The extra loop offers about 50 kilometers of winding roads through a beautiful, remote landscape. For those who still have some energy left, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the Montenegrin nature once more. But if you prefer to go straight to your overnight accommodation, there is also a shorter route. Turn left immediately after the bridge, and follow the road north. In no time at all, you will arrive at Household Hadzic, your final destination.
You will end the day with a unique experience at Household Hadzic, a guesthouse where you will be welcomed by a local family. This is not a standard hotel stay, but a chance to get to know the culture and customs of Montenegro. Here you will enjoy a home-cooked meal, prepared with local ingredients, and you will have the chance to talk to your host and hostess about life in this remote region. A wonderful end to a day full of adventure and nature, and an experience you will not soon forget. To ensure a place to stay here, it is best to contact us in advance and book an overnight stay with food.
This Montenegro drive is an adventure full of twists, turns, mountains and beautiful views. From the deep Tara Canyon to the serene Otilovići Lake, and from the hidden viewpoint at the Cehotina River to the hospitality of Household Hadzic.

About this region
Montenegro ( (listen); Montenegrin: Црна Гора, lit. 'Black Mountain', pronounced [tsr̩̂ːnaː ɡǒra]) is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is located on the Adriatic Sea and is a part of the Balkans, sharing borders with Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north and west, Kosovo to the east, Albania to the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the southwest. The Principality of Zeta emerged in the 14th and 15th centuries. From the late 14th century to the late 18th century, large parts of southern Montenegro were ruled by the Venetian Republic and incorporated into Venetian Albania. The name Montenegro was first used to refer to the country in the late 15th century. After falling under Ottoman rule, Montenegro regained its independence in 1696 under the rule of the House of Petrović-Njegoš, first as a theocracy and later as a secular principality. Montenegro's independence was recognized by the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. In 1910, the country became a kingdom.
After World War I, the kingdom became part of Yugoslavia. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together proclaimed a federation. Following an independence referendum held in May 2006, Montenegro declared its independence and the confederation peacefully dissolved.Montenegro has an upper middle-income economy and ranks 48th in the Human Development Index. It is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, and the Central European Free Trade Agreement. Montenegro is also a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean, and is currently in the process of joining the European Union.
