This is the 7th route in my Vorarlberg circular tours collection.
This round trip takes you to Liechtenstein to ride over the St. Luzisteig to Maienfeld. After a small detour via Schliers, the route leads through the Tamina and Calfeisental to St. Martin and back to Vorarlberg.
Start and finish: Rankweil (gastronomy workshop)
Course: Rankweil - Vaduz - Luzisteig - Maienfeld - Schliers - Pfäfers - Vättis - Sankt Martin - Valens - Bad Ragaz - Sargans - Buchs - Vorarlberg
The route is identical for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute app.
If you drive this tour, please note the following information:
● Some mountain experience necessary
● Although the tour isn't particularly long, plan a little more time because the road from Gigerwaldsee is a one-way street. The passage to Sankt Martin is only permitted on the hour, for 20 minutes (photo, point 21). The return trip is possible every half hour.
● If your bike needs cleaning, do it after this tour! It can still be very wet in the tunnels from Gigerwaldsee to Sankt Martin, even after a long dry period.
I give this tour 5 stars. It offers everything that a great motorcycle tour needs. The breathtaking landscape, the varied roads and the fantastic views of the Calfeisental will inspire you.

The Salginatobel Bridge is a highlight in the history of bridge construction. Since its completion in 1930, it has had a magical effect on professionals and artists as an outstanding engineering achievement and as a modern work of art. In 1991 the American Society of Civil Engineers named it a "world monument" and since then it has been in the elite circle of famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty or the Inca city of Machu Picchu.
After the short break, you return to Landquart the same way. After you have crossed the Rhine, you will reach Pfäfers and thus the entrance to the Tamina Valley. The tour leads to the Mapraggsee, the first reservoir of the day, on a very beautiful panoramic road. The road past the reservoir is a bit narrower and more winding.
But immediately afterwards, the valley opens up again and you drive on a wide and well-developed road to Vättis, in the Calfeisental. After passing through the town, the adventurous approach to the 2nd reservoir of today's tour, the Gigerwaldsee, begins. At the end of the dam wall you have to observe the traffic light regulations for the onward journey to Sankt Martin and occasionally take a break. During this time, enjoy the stunning views from the dam and the time will pass faster than you would like.
When the traffic light turns green, the journey to Sankt Martin can be continued. An approx. 4 km long, narrow, winding road peppered with tunnels leads you to Sankt Martin. Since the tunnels are not lit, you can now make good use of any additional headlights that may be present.
Arrived in Sankt Martin, there is a large, well-developed car park on the left. From here you can walk to the small hamlet in a few minutes. If short "off-road" routes are also possible with your motorbike, you can head for the gravel car park directly at the hamlet.
The hamlet of Sankt Martin is a Walser settlement in the Calfeisental that is more than 700 years old. Here it looks as if time has stood still. It's like an open-air museum with small wooden houses, a water mill, a church, etc. From around 1300 to 1650, around 100 Walser lived in the settlement. Next to the church is the Walser house, the year 1588 of which is still legible. A restaurant is now housed in the former sexton's house, which also rents out a few double rooms and a dormitory.
Take your time and discover Sankt Martin on a small tour. You will discover something new around every corner. After the fine meal it is time for the return journey. Note that the return trip is only possible every half hour.
Follow the same route back to the end of the Mapragg reservoir. Then switch to the other side of the Taminatal and drive down to Bad Ragaz on a very well-developed road. At the end of the Taminatal you will be able to see the new Tamina Bridge from afar and experience the ride over the bridge.
From Bad Ragaz you drive back to Rankweil on beautiful country roads. Shortly after Buchs you will see Werdenberg Castle on the left, high above a lake. After you have crossed the Rhine bridge, it is only a few kilometers back to the starting point and you can already look forward to a cool drink.

Liechtenstein
About this region
Liechtenstein ( (listen) LIK-tən-styne; German: [ˈlɪçtn̩ʃtaɪn]), officially the Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein), is a German-speaking microstate situated in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland, which are located in Central Europe. The principality is a semi-constitutional monarchy headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein; the Prince's extensive powers are equivalent to those of a President in a semi-presidential system like France.
Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres (62 square miles) and a population of 38,749. Divided into 11 municipalities, its capital is Vaduz, and its largest municipality is Schaan. It is also the smallest country to border two countries. Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan make up the only two doubly landlocked countries in the world.
Economically, Liechtenstein has one of the highest gross domestic products per person in the world when adjusted for purchasing power parity. The country has a strong financial sector centred in Vaduz. It was once known as a billionaire tax haven, but is no longer on any official blacklists of uncooperative tax haven countries. An Alpine country, Liechtenstein is mountainous, making it a winter sport destination.
Liechtenstein is a member of the United Nations, the European Free Trade Association, and the Council of Europe. Although not a member of the European Union, it participates in both the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area. It has a customs union and a monetary union with Switzerland.
